Funeral prayers of Begum Shamim Akhtar offered

LAHORE, Nov 28 - The funeral prayers of Begum Shamim Akhtar, the mother of former Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif and Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) President Shehbaz Sharif was offered at Sharif Medical City (SMC) on Saturday.


As per details, the prayers were led by Maulana Ragib Naeemi. Scores of
PML-N leaders and workers attended it. She will be laid to rest at
Sharif family’s ancestral graveyard next to the grave of her husband,
Mian Sharif.

She was buried at Jati Umra alongside her husband. The 90-year-old died
in London last week after seeking medical treatment abroad.

According to sources, the Qul ceremony of Begum Shamim Akhtar will be
held at Jati Umra which will be attended by Sharif family’s members.

It is pertinent to mention here that Nawaz Sharif didn't attend the
funeral because of his health conditions. He is currently seeking
treatment in London.

According to the PML-N spokesperson, her funeral prayers were offered at
London's Regent Park Mosque on Friday as well. Due to coronavirus
restrictions, only 30 people, including Nawaz, his sons Hassan Nawaz,
Hussain Nawaz, former finance minister Ishaq Dar and other close
relatives were allowed to attend the funeral prayers.

Earlier, Begum Shamim Akhtar’s body arrived in Lahore via British
Airways flight BA-059 and was received in Lahore by Shehbaz Sharif, his
son Hamza Shehbaz and other members of the Sharif family at the Allama
Iqbal International Airport.

Begum Shamim passed away in London on November 22. She was staying in
London with her son Nawaz Sharif and had been ill for quite some time.

Shehbaz Sharif and his son Hamza Shehbaz were released by Punjab
government on parole to attend his Begum Shamim Akhtar’s funeral and
burial. The two have been released for a period of five days.

Shehbaz and Hamza were being held at Kot Lakhpat jail in Lahore in
different NAB cases.
