Experts shed light on the evolution of education and healthcare in Pakistan

ISLAMABAD, JUN 7: Pakistan needs to invest in the education sector by devising a need-driven strategy allowing the right of education to all, to avert our major problems like economic crisis and extremism,.. The education system in Pakistan is suffering from severe issues, including commercialism, and to achieve our sustainable goals, an educational emergency is the need of the hour.

These views were expressed by eminent national and foreign education and health experts during a panel discussion.

The discussion “Evolution of Education and Healthcare” was held on Day 1 at the Pakistan Pavilion during the World Economic Forum. This important discussion session on Pakistan was organized by the Karachi Council on Foreign Relations in collaboration with the Swiss Asian Chamber of Commerce.

The panel comprised Dr. Huma Baqai, Senior Vice Chairperson KCFR, Dr. Linda Zangwill, Professor University of California, Dr. Marc Siegel, CEO Siegel Associates, and Mr. Ali Shah, CEO iPath, while senior journalist Faysal Aziz Khan moderated the session.

Opening the discussion, Faysal Aziz Khan gave a brief overview of the education system and public health facilities in Pakistan. Sharing the information provided by the government and government agencies, he termed the educational situation in the country as deteriorating and said that Pakistan, at present, had made a global ranking for out-of-school children between the ages of 5 and 16.

Pakistan is second only to Nigeria, with a very large number of girls of the same age, about 59%, that do not go to school for various reasons. Faysal Aziz said that the running of the education system in the country had gone into the hands of the private sector which was making this sacred mission a for-profit business.

Talking about the public health facilities in Pakistan, he said that 70% of the medical facilities in the country were being provided by the private sector, and that the public sector was under severe pressure in this regard. He said that the medical treatment was one of the basic human needs but it had also turned into a lucrative business.

Dr. Huma Baqai, Senior Vice Chairperson KCFR, while shedding light on Pakistan's deteriorating education system, said that capitalism had destroyed education in Pakistan as we gradually turned education into a privilege instead of a right, and more so how we allowed the private sector to impart the good education by leaving our public sector in shatters.

“We are the fifth largest country in the world and we need to impart quality skill-based education to our youth. Pakistan needs a multipronged education strategy and there is no way we can continue with such a limited approach,” she said.

Mentioning Pakistan’s low literacy rate, she said that anyone who could read or write his name was considered to be literate, but it was not literacy at all. While expressing deep concern over the precarious situation of the education system, Huma said that education in Pakistan had been made a commercial product instead of a fundamental right which was not acceptable in any way.

Dr. Linda Zingwell shared her experiences in health sector management and shed light on modern technologies being used to overcome the problems being faced by health institutions. Dr. Zingwell told the audience that the world was moving towards using Artificial Intelligence in healthcare which would be revolutionizing health services in the near future.

Ali Shah, CEO iPath, shed light on modern-day healthcare system which enables the healthcare professionals to access the personal data of specific patients. He urged the Pakistani authorities to establish National Electronic Heath Record Platform as many other countries around the globe had begun to streamline their healthcare systems. If such a platform is developed, all relevant information of a patient would be accessible by entering their national ID number, he said. Protesters demand lifting of ban on student unions

Protesters demand lifting of ban on student unions

ISLAMABAD, FEB 11 (Raja Furqan) Hundreds of students representing educational institutions across the twin cities held a protest march on Wednesday to mark the 38th anniversary of the ban on student unions imposed by the military regime of General Zia ul Haq.

Uniting on the platform of the Progressive Students Federation (PrSF), various left-wing and ethnic-national organisations gathered at the National Press Club from where a peaceful march took place to F-6 Supermarket along with trade unionists, intellectuals, progressive political workers and ordinary citizens. Speaking on the occasion, PrSF leaders Ikramullah Mahseed, Faryal Rasheed, Jamil bin Iqbal, Sanaa'i Muhammad, Israr Gharsheen, Mustafa Wynne and others said that almost 4 decades in which criminalization of politics on college and university campuses has had a devastating effect on the democratic process in general and the development of youth in particular.

They said that right-wing and exclusionary ideologies have gained ground, violence in educational spaces has become commonplace, and patriarchal norms have become deeply institutionalized. They said that the primary responsibility for unbanning student unions now lies with mainstream political parties who must take it upon themselves to pass legislation in the parliament to decriminalize student politics and democratize campuses more generally.

Other speakers included Alia Amirali and Ammar Rashid of the Awami Workers Party, Mushtaq Chaudhry of the Pakistan Inquilabi Party and Asif Rasheed of the Revolutionary Students Federation who noted that privatization of education is intensifying with each passing day resulting in spiralling fees, a severe shortage of hostels and other campus facilities, declining quality of education and unaccountable faculty and administrators.

They also slammed the brutalization of students from ethnic peripheries through practices like enforced disappearances. The rally demanded removal of the ban on student unions and immediate conduction of nationwide student union elections, an end to the privatization of educational institutions, reimbursement of the fee taken after increments and free education for all, reversal of the cuts in education budget levied by HEC, removal of mandatory affidavit signing and freedom to conduct political activities on-campus, an end to campus securitization and the immediate return of arrested/missing students, uniformity in hostel curfews of both male and female students, immediate formation of anti-harassment committees with an effective representation of students in all campuses in Pakistan, provision of free hostels and transportation facilities to all students, an end to the class-based education system and implementation of a curriculum based on the principles of science, the immediate provision of a university in every district and increase in the quota for students hailing from peripheries, provision of jobs to unemployed students or the provision of unemployment allowance, end to on-campus harassment of students based on their nationality, language, class or religion, immediate provision of hostels in Islamabad to students hailing from far-flung areas and end to CDA-led private hostel evictions in the capital.

PYCA organizes webinar on “Pakistan, Education & Agenda 2030”

PYCA organizes webinar on “Pakistan, Education & Agenda 2030”

ISLAMABAD, FEB 9: Education in Pakistan is a topic of prime national importance. There can possibly be no two opinions about the fact that education is integral to the prosperity of our country.”

These views were expressed by senior journalist ZarrarKhuhro while moderating the webinar, “Pakistan, Education & Agenda 2030” organized by Pakistan Youth Change Advocates (PYCA).

Panellists of the webinar included members of the Punjab assemblyUzmaKardar and Bushra Anjum Butt, senior journalist QuatrinaHosain and PYCA’s Executive Director Areebah Shahid.

Areebah Shahid while sharing the findings of PYCA’s recently published whitepaper, “Public Investment in Education: An Appraised of SDG 4” pointed out, “SDG-4 talks about equitable education for all.

Our whitepaper noted that the education departments/ministries and the SDG secretariats across the country were working in isolation. Owing to this Pakistan is yet to devise a mechanism that would allow the progress made under SDG-4 to be effectively gauged.”

She also shared that the targets that Pakistan had set for itself under SDG-4 and the actual areas where education budgets were being allocated and spent did not have much in common.

Speaking about the role of the opposition in furthering the education agenda, PML (N)’s MPA Bushra Anjum Butt shared, “Pakistan's education dilemma cannot be addressed in isolation. We require strong coordination between governmental departments, between the NGOs, and between the provinces.”

Senior journalist, Quatrina Hosain urged the state to declare an education emergency throughout the country.

“We need to have an emergency declared for education. This should be followed by each MNA and MPA taking the responsibility of monitoring the schools in their respective constituencies. In all likability, this will quickly turn things around for the better.”

Chairperson of the provincial Standing Committee on Gender Mainstreaming, MPA UzmaKardaracknowledged that girls’ access to education across Punjab remained a challenge.

“We are conscious of and committed to ensuring that greater resources are allocated to bring and retain more girls at the secondary level.”

She also stated that the first step in this direction would have to be the allocation of greater resources for education.

“We can't make any substantial difference at the current rate at which Pakistan is investing in its education system.”

The webinar was part of PYCA’s “Invest in Education, Strengthen Pakistan” campaign.
