Dia Mirza asks fans to play their part in helping the earth heal this year

Dia Mirza asks fans to play their part in helping the earth heal this year

NEW DELHI, JAN 2 - Bollywood star Dia Mirza is without a doubt, one of the most environmentally cautious actors in the industry.

The 39-year-old has been using her platform continuously to spread awareness about climate change and the environment.

During an interview with Hindustan Times, the actor reminded her fans to follow a greener and earth-centric lifestyle.

“The last few years have clearly signalled that actions have consequences. And if the spate of natural disasters and the pandemic itself has taught us anything, it is that we need to reconsider the way we treat nature and the way we live,” she said.

“In 2021, let us resolve to become better citizens of our planet with our choices. We all have a part to play in helping the earth heal. And it is not very difficult to make a small change today that will collectively and positively impact our future in the only home that we have ever known,” she went on to say.

“Just one positive resolution can have a far-reaching impact on the well-being of Mother Earth but five can be potentially transformative. Taking showers that last less than five minutes reduces wastage of water and reminds us that it is not an inexhaustible resource. We must refuse all single use plastics,” she continued.

“We should segregate and compost waste at home as this not only makes the job of sanitation workers easy, it makes you aware of how much waste is being generated in a household, how much can be recycled, composted, is bio-degradable and how much is headed towards a landfill,” she added.

Dr Abdul Salam's residence in Britain is now a national heritage site

Professor Michael Duff who completed his PhD in 1972 under the supervision of Professor Salam, too commented on the acknowledgement, praising his mentor whole-heartedly.

“A blue plaque on the house in Putney where he lived for 40 years is a fitting tribute to Nobel Laureate Abdus Salam, who was not only one of the finest scientists of the twentieth century, having unified two of the four fundamental forces of nature, but who also dedicated his life to the betterment of science and education in the developing world,” he said.

Professor Ian Walmsley, another one his students and now a provost at Imperial, deemed Salam's contribution to the subject profound, calling his "commitment to science deep, as exemplified by his founding of the International Centre for Theoretical Physics in Trieste, which has the aim of building science capability and capacity in the developing world.”

His son Ahmad Salam, said the words on the plaque would have made his father very happy. "For him, above all else, that was the legacy he wanted to impart."

Many cricket legends refused to give me interview because of my gender, says Zainab Abbas

Many cricket legends refused to give me interview because of my gender, says Zainab Abbas

"Sports is generally considered an equaliser of sorts - something that doesn't take gender, class or skin colour into account. Instead, it focuses on your talent, skills, meritocracy, where your performance in the sporting field is more important than anything else."

In her TED Talk, Pakistani sports presenter Zainab Abbas revealed what it's like to be a woman in an industry that is predominated by men. Speaking about breaking barriers, how she made it into the cricketing world and the advice she has for newcomers, the television host opened up about all the prejudice she faced as a woman with a passion for sports.

Speaking up about her own childhood, the journalist remembered how she was bullied choosing to play games such as cricket, as she grew up around five boys.

"Sports became my passion. You cannot imagine how disappointed desi parents would be to find out that their child was skipping an exam to follow an event. That's how passionate I was. The World Cup was on at that particular time and I decided to watch that, and skip my event. I even saved money during the 2009 World T-20 and decided to watch all the games. I was broke by the end, but it was all worth it."

Having graduated from England, Abbas initially thought she wanted to do a corporate job but soon realised she wasn't cut out for it.

"I faced a racist boss, I was the only brown girl in the entire department and he would pick on me on every occasion," she recalled, saying that's when she eventually quit the job, did some soul-searching, looked for her true calling and decided to follow her passion.

"I thought the sporting world would be the torch-bearer of sportsmanship, free of racism, free of prejudices - but I was quite wrong," she divulged, reflecting back on the opportunity she received from a leading news channel.

"There was a man sitting with a smirk on his face, and he asked me condescendingly, 'Reverse swing kya hoti hai?' I had a smile on my face as I knew what he was asking about. I answered politely. He was half impressed so to speak and he decided in those five minutes that he would give me an shot. That's how my journey started."

She said her incident prepared her for never giving up on her dreams, regardless of how many were laughing.

"I had no mentors to look up to. When I entered the field, people made fun of me because they believed women should not be talking about sports, shouldn't be playing sports; she has no business there."

Because she had no formal training, Abbas faced many challenges both professionally and personally.

"I am deaf from my left ear," she recalled, "And while doing a show, your ears keep you facilitated. I had my earpiece in one ear listening to the director, and supposedly your other ear is there to listen to your guests; I realised it was about multi-tasking and there was no room for any errors on live TV. You get exposed very easily."

"I broke down that day, and I still remember calling my mother and telling her I don't think I can do this job because I have this issue. But I continued to train, master my skills and somewhat learnt how to lip-read. What helped me was my knowledge and research about the subject; everything else was improvisation."

Zainab said the initial reaction she received was mixed. While they acknowledged she knew what she was talking about, many envied her.

"I had fellow journalists alleging that I was imitating their content and I soon learnt how to develop a thick skin. I realised I needed to be even more focused and ambitious to reach where I wanted."

"There was also a time many cricket legends refuse to give me an interview because of my gender," she remembered. "That has happened. I was heartbroken because as a child these were the heroes I looked up to. After a couple of years, when I had cemented my place in the industry, those same two gentleman came forward to give me an interview. That was the irony."

Abbas said the world just wasn't prepared to watch a woman taking a lead in her field that is usually guarded by men. "Remember: never let the critics bother you or allow people to get under your skin," she advised her followers.

"Finally in 2019, I was picked by the International Cricket Council to represent Pakistan at the World Cup. That was the peak of my career because nobody from Pakistan had reached that level, certainly not a woman."

Raj Kapoor and Dilip Kumar's decaying ancestral mansions are being brought to life in Peshawar

Raj Kapoor and Dilip Kumar's decaying ancestral mansions are being brought to life in Peshawar

Tucked away near the centuries-old Storytellers' Bazaar, the decaying mansions in Peshawar once home to Bollywood superstars are being brought back to life.

The ancestral homes of Golden Age heroes Raj Kapoor and Dilip Kumar in the northwestern city are symbols of its link to the world's largest film industry, but have suffered from decades of neglect.

The region's archaeology team says it is close to wresting the more than 100-year-old buildings, located in the heart of the historic walled city, from their private owners so they can be restored and turned into museums.

“I always feel sad and angry while looking at Kapoor's house, that it once was a beautiful mansion of top quality,” said Samiuddin Khan, who remembers running through the 40-room abandoned house as a child and flying kites from the rooftop.

“It was extremely beautiful inside. The structure is still intact but some walls have collapsed and much of the wood has been damaged.” Once an architectural wonder, the family home of Kapoor, who died aged 63 in 1988, is influenced by Mughal empire, Central Asian and British colonial design, featuring ornately carved doors and balconies and gothic-style windows.

Raj Kapoor and Dilip Kumar's decaying ancestral mansions are being brought to life in Peshawar

Kumar lived in a simpler home down a small lane in a busy market, its entrance faded and its roofless interior heavily damaged.

The actors grew up in a quarter that is home to the fabled Qissa Khwani (Storytellers) Bazaar where travellers would share tales of their adventures.

Kumar, who is now 97, has credited his successful career to his early life in the neighbourhood, where he first learned to narrate.

But like many emerging actors, the pair were enticed away from Peshawar to India's entertainment centre Bombay, now Mumbai, in the years before the partition.

The pair even starred alongside each other at the beginning of their careers, in the 1949 hit Andaz.

“This is our cultural heritage and we take pride in preserving it. We are very proud that Dilip Kumar and Raj Kapoor were from Peshawar,” said Abdul Samad, director of archaeology and museums in Khyber-Pakhtunkhwa province.

Present-day Indian superstar Shah Rukh Khan, known as the King of Bollywood, also has links to the area but his family home which is still in use has not suffered the same decline.

Across the country, hundreds of pre-partition buildings have been left to ruin or been demolished over the years.

Many had been built by Hindus and Sikhs who left them behind when they fled newly founded Pakistan for India, archaeology experts say.

Peshawar suffered a huge knock-back to its cultural standing after becoming a hotbed of violence from the 1980s onwards, bringing an end to the golden era of Pashto-language cinema in the region, known as Pollywood.

Militant groups, including Tehreek-i-Taliban Pakistan, bombed at least three cinemas and more than 100 music shops before a military crackdown near the border with Afghanistan in 2015 resulted in drastic improvements in security.

As the city revives, more than 1,800 heritage buildings with traditional features have been identified for preservation by the province's archaeology team, but Pakistan could need years to arrange the finances required to their purchase and restoration.

“If a proper archaeological survey was conducted, we would discover a cultural site almost every kilometre,” said archaeological director Samad about Khyber Pakhtunkhwa.

There are hurdles still to overcome in saving the Kapoor mansion too.

Its owner Hajji Ali Qadir told AFP he would take the authorities to court if they did not pay him at least two billion rupees ($12.5 million).

“I told them that it's an antique and the price for an antique is multiplied 10 times,” he said. “We will get more money if we build a plaza here.” The archaeology department has said it will use legal powers if needed to purchase the Kapoor and Kumar homes with taxpayer money, for a figure still to be determined by the province's financial authorities.

“We felt proud and held our heads high while watching the actors from Peshawar performing in Indian movies, that this land has produced such great actors who proved their worth in Mumbai,” Khalo Khalil Sarhadi, an 80-year-old resident of Peshawar, told AFP.

“Now the new generation will know how Peshawar has produced big stars and actors, those who have given an identity to Pakistan and India,” he said of the museum projects.

Item numbers are not 'art' — they're nonsense, says Hamza Ali Abbasi

Item numbers are not 'art' — they're nonsense, says Hamza Ali Abbasi

"You don't demean a woman on screen and call it art. It may be my opinion but then why aren't strip shows art? From a religious point of view and even a secular point of view, it's wrong," he concluded.

From cancelling his Netflix subscription to voicing his thoughts on sexual harassment, Hamza Ali Abbasi is known for his bold comments that may or may not sit well with people.

Recently, in an interview regarding the release of his upcoming movie The Legend Of Maula Jatt, the actor once again weighed in — this time on item songs and their prevalence in the mainstream media.

"Why are item numbers so bad?" the interviewer questioned, referring to a previous comment Abbasi had made, making his objection obvious post the release of his film Jawani Phir Nahi Ani.

"Let me ask you, what could be wrong where dance moves are based upon the utter objectification of the woman who is dancing?" he asked sarcastically in return, when questioned if his reservations were because of them being un-Islamic in nature.

“A song which focuses on the sexual appeal of the woman, the lyrics also focus on the sexual appeal of the woman and it comes on television and circulates on social media for children to watch — what do you think could be wrong with that? Obviously it is wrong!"

The Waar actor went on to say that such dances have a massive negative global impact on mainstream media.

"We don't need it. It's the lowest form of art to take clothes off a woman. It's not art, it's nonsense. It has had a negative impact on our country. Even India and Bollywood are distancing themselves from it. It's considered a B-grade type of content."

Abbasi took the moment to appreciate Rajkumar Hirani's 3 Idiots for being a movie he loved, without any "obscene" songs in it.

"You don't demean a woman on screen and call it art. It may be my opinion but then why aren't strip shows art? From a religious point of view and even a secular point of view, it's wrong," he concluded.

"I don't know why we've come to a point where we can sit with our families and watch this!" he said in disdain, acknowledging that while some may call him conservative, there will be some who will agree with him. "That's how the world is," he laughed.

In the first part of the interview, Hamza discussed television and its impact on those around him.

"TV has this massive reach in Pakistan that cinemas don't," accepted Hamza, owing his popularity to Pyarey Afzal. The actor, however, said he does not regard himself as a 'celebrity'.

"I don't define myself as a celebrity but as someone who did some projects. People recognise me from my face and that's all. I think I can call myself a public personality though because I'm known for other things as well, such as my religious opinions."

Concluding, brimming with praise for his co-actor Fawad Khan, he also mentioned how The Legend of Maula Jatt would be his last film for a long time, given the many other projects he is occupied with.
