ICC WORLD T20: PM Imran tells Babar Azam play aggressive and fearless cricket against India

ICC WORLD T20: PM Imran tells Babar Azam play aggressive and fearless cricket against India

PM Imran gives 1992 World Cup winning tips to Babar Azam for today’s match against India

DUBAI, OCT 24: Skipper Babar Azam has said Pakistan's Prime Minister Imran Khan -- who led the country to victory in the 1992 World Cup -- had shared his experiences with the team.

"The Prime Minister met us before our departure and shared his experiences of the 1992 win and told us to play aggressive and fearless cricket against India."

Pakistan have lost all seven World Cup (50 over) clashes against India as well as five games in the Twenty20 World Cup and start as 'underdogs'.

Exuding confidence, Babar stressed that the past is irrelevant to his players.

"To be honest, what has passed is beyond us," Babar told a virtual media conference on Saturday, as both nations buzzed in anticipation of a thrilling match.

"We want to use our ability and confidence on the day of the match so that we can get a better result.

"Records are meant to be broken."

The tickets for the match were sold out within hours of going on sale after the United Arab Emirate government allowed a 70 percent crowd for the Twenty20 World Cup matches in a relaxation of the Covid-19 restrictions.

The South Asian nuclear rivals have only played in multi-national events like the World Cups and the Champions Trophy as strained relations have stalled bilateral cricket since 2007.

Pakistan did tour India in 2012 for five limited over matches but ties were not fully resumed as the two nations continued to be at loggerheads over multiple issues, with the disputed region of Kashmir and terrorism heading the list.

Babar admitted it will be a match full of intensity.

"The matches between Pakistan and India are always full of intensity so we need to perform well in all three departments of the game," said Babar.

The second round matches -- Super 12 Stage -- start on Saturday with Australia taking on South Africa in Abu Dhabi while defending champions the West Indies face England in Dubai in the evening match in Group 1.

Bangladesh and Sri Lanka are the other two teams in the Group.

Former champions India and Pakistan are placed in Group 2 along with New Zealand, Afghanistan and Scotland and Namibia, who both came through the qualifying stage.

Babar announced 12 for the match with hard-hitters Haider Ali and Asif Ali competing to make the final eleven.

"The boys are excited to play the World Cup and we have a crucial match on Sunday," said Babar, who will be leading Pakistan for the first time in a senior World Cup match.

"A winning impact is necessary and then we will go match by match."

Babar said Pakistan's Prime Minister Imran Khan -- who led the country to victory in the 1992 World Cup -- had shared his experiences with the team.

"The Prime Minister met us before our departure and shared his experiences of the 1992 win and told us to play aggressive and fearless cricket against India."

Earlier this week, India won both their warm-up matches, beating England and Australia while Pakistan beat the West Indies but lost to South Africa.

ICC WORLD T20: Adil Rashid stars as England crush Windies

ICC WORLD T20: Adil Rashid stars as England crush Windies

DUBAI, OCT 24: Adil Rashid returned figures of 4-2 to set up a six-wicket victory for England after they dismissed defending champions West Indies for a paltry 55 at the Twenty20 World Cup on Saturday.

West Indies rattled England’s top order before Jos Buttler (24) and skipper Eoin Morgan (7) took the team home in 8.2 overs in Dubai.

Left-arm spinner Akeal Hosein took two wickets and Moeen Ali was run out, but the target proved too meagre to challenge England.

Moeen opened the bowling for England with his off-spin and made an instant impact, first with a sharp running catch to remove Evin Lewis. He then got the wicket of Lendl Simmons.

Pace bowler Tymal Mills claimed two wickets including Chris Gayle, the only batsman to make double figures with his 13, as West Indies crumbled in a poor batting performance from the two-time champions.

Rashid entered the attack with West Indies on 44-6 and bowled the big-hitting Andre Russell for nought. He took two more wickets in successive balls in his next over and then wrapped up the innings.

He returned outstanding figures of 4-2 from his 2.2 overs of leg-spin.

West Indies avoided their worst T20 total of 45 against the same opposition in 2019.

The two sides met five years after their clash in the 2016 final in Kolkata when Carlos Brathwaite hit Ben Stokes for four straight sixes in the last over.

But with Saturday’s crushing performance, England have fired a warning to their rivals in the seventh edition of T20’s showpiece event.

ICC WORLD T20: Australia down South Africa in low-scoring match

ICC WORLD T20: Australia down South Africa in low-scoring match

DUBAI, OCT 23: Australia have defeated South Africa by five wickets in a low-scoring thriller during group one’s opening match of ICC Men’s T20 World Cup.

The Aussies chased down the total of 119 for the loss of five wickets with Marcus Stoinis hitting 10 in the final over, bowled by Dwaine Pretorius.

Australia dominated South Africa after skipper Aaron Finch opted to bowl first. Surprisingly, they dropped left-arm spinner Ashton Agar but it didn’t hamper them as Glenn Maxwell stepped up with his off-spin.

Maxwell rattled stumps of Proteas’ skipper Temba Bavuma in second over of the match. Bavuma (12), who hit two fours off Mitchell Starc’s first over, missed a straighter one.

Josh Hazlewood created further havoc for South Africa by removing in-form Rassie van der Dussen (2). Soon after, wicketkeeper Quinton de Kock (7) was dismissed in an unusual fashion as he tried to scoop Hazlewood’s back-of-a-length delivery, which hit his thigh-pad and bounced back onto the stumps.

South Africa looked to rebuild with Aiden Markram and Heinrich Klaasen but the partnership didn’t last long as Pat Cummins picked his first wicket. Klassen (13) looked to play on the left side but a leading edge took the ball straight to Steve Smith.

Markram tried to bat deep with other batters but Adam Zampa’s double-strike and Keshav Maharaj’s run out troubled his efforts.

Markram played a handy knock of 40 in 36 balls, powered by three fours and a six while Kagiso Rabada chipped in with 23-ball 19 to take Proteas total to 118/9.

Starc, Hazlewood and Zampa bagged two each for Australia.

In reply, Australia lost their opening pair of Finch (0) and David Warner (14) inside the powerplay. Mitchell Marsh (11) was the next man to walk back as he tried to take on Maharaj, he was caught at the deep mid-wicket by Van der Dussen.

Smith and Maxwell paired up for the fourth wicket to provide some stability to the chase but Proteas made a comeback with two quick dismissals.

Smith connected well for a pull shot but Markram ran and executed a perfect full-stretched dive to complete the catch. The right-hander scored 35 off 34 with the help of three fours. Maxwell fell cheaply as he tried to switch hit Tabraiz Shamsi but missed it completely. He made 18 off 21.

South Africa’s joy of sensing a win was ended by wicketkeeper Matthew Wade and Marcus Stoinis as they took their side home with an unbeaten stand of 40.

Anrich Nortje was pick of the bowlers for South Africa as he bagged figures of 2/21 in four overs.
