President of Azerbaijan Ilham Aliyev gets the highest Turkish award

ISTANBUL, NOV 13: President of the Republic of Turkey Recep Tayyip Erdogan presented the "Turkish World High Order" to the President of the Republic of Azerbaijan Ilham Aliyev at the 8th Summit of the Cooperation Council of Turkic Speaking Countries (Turkic Council) held in Istanbul.

The 8th Summit of Heads of State of the Turkic Council, organized with the theme of "Green Technologies and Smart Cities in the Digital Age", started on the Democracy and Freedoms Island in Istanbul.

President Erdoğan, who officially opened the Turkic Council General Secretariat building together with the leaders of the Turkic Council member countries before the summit, presented the President of Azerbaijan Aliyev with the "High Order of the Turkic World" for the Karabakh Victory, in accordance with the decision taken by the Council of Heads of Turkic Speaking Countries.

In the award decision of the Council of Heads of Turkic Speaking States, "Commander-in-Chief Ilham Aliyev, on the grounds that he made significant contributions to the Turkish unity with his historic victory that re-established the territorial integrity and liberation of the lands of the Republic of Azerbaijan, and paved the way for permanent peace and stability in the region", stated that "Commander-in-Chief Ilham Aliyev has been appointed by the Council of Heads of State. Upon his proposal, the President of the Republic of Turkey, His Excellency Recep Tayyip Erdogan, has decided to award His Excellency Ilham Aliyev with the 'Great Order of the Turkic World'.

The decision was signed by President of Kazakhstan Kassym-Jomart Tokayev, President of Kyrgyzstan Sadyr Japarov, President of Turkey Recep Tayyip Erdoğan and President of Uzbekistan Shavkat Mirziyoyev.

President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan, in his speech at the award ceremony, said:

“Mr. President, Dear Brother, Victorious Commander-in-Chief, Mr. Ilham Aliyev. Under your determined leadership, the occupation of Karabakh, which lasted for almost 30 years, ended in a short period of 44 days.

This is of great importance not only for our Azerbaijani brothers, but also for the entire Turkic world. As a result of the Patriotic War, the United Nations Security Council resolutions, which had not been implemented for years, were finally implemented. Thus, Azerbaijan has written a message of justice in the memory of the international community. The restoration of the territorial integrity of Azerbaijan has expanded the unity and equality of the Turkish world. Kharibulbul, the symbol of Karabakh's freedom, was the herald of Victory for the Turkish world. The Karabakh Victory not only liberated the occupied lands, but also paved the way for lasting peace, stability and cooperation in our region.

On this occasion, I am very happy to present the Turkish World Regulations to my dear brother Ilham Aliyev. I commemorate our heroes who rose to the summit of martyrdom on the road to freedom with gratitude and respect.”

Aliyev, who transferred the term presidency of the Turkic Council to President Erdogan, stated that Turkey will successfully carry out the term presidency of the Turkic Council in his speech, and said:

“As the leader of the Turkish world, my dear brother (President Erdogan) will only succeed in these efforts because Turkey has come a long way thanks to his great vision. Turkey has proven to be a great power not only in the region but also globally. The power of Turkey is now recognized all over the world. We are talking about both its political and military power, and there is no country in the world that is not aware of this power of Turkey.”

No anti-Pakistan elements in Afghanistan: FM Muttaqi

No anti-Pakistan elements in Afghanistan: FM Muttaqi

ISLAMABAD, NOV 12: Afghanistan’s acting Foreign Minister Amir Khan Muttaqi on Friday denied the presence of anti-Pakistan elements in his country, assuring that the Taliban-led government was making all-out efforts to ensure that Afghan soil was not used against any country.

Muttaqi, who is leading a 20-member delegation on a three-day visit to Pakistan, expressed the views while addressing a seminar at the Institute of Strategic Studies Islamabad.

The Afghan official also confirmed that the interim government had facilitated talks between the banned Tehreek-i-Taliban Pakistan (TTP) and the Pakistan government.

However, he refrained from elaborating on the role of Afghanistan’s acting Interior Minister Sirajuddin Haqqani, who used to head the Haqqani network — the most violent faction of the Taliban — in the negotiations.

Earlier this week, Information Minister Fawad Chaudhry had announced that a complete ceasefire had been reached between the government and the banned Tehreek-i-Taliban Pakistan (TTP). At the same time, Chaudhry had said that the interim Afghan government had facilitated the negotiations — a claim reiterated by the TTP itself.

Addressing the seminar on Sunday, Muttaqi expressed the hope that talks between the two sides would be extended and welcomed the ceasefire reached between the Pakistan government and TTP.

“We hope that the temporary ceasefire agreed between the Pakistan government and TTP will lead to permanent peace,” he added.

Taliban government’s recognition

To a question about the rest of the world recognising the Taliban government and allowing women to work — one of the conditions that the international community has been pressing for recognising the Taliban government — Muttaqi acknowledged that initially, the Taliban government had announced conditions for women to be able to work.

“However, those were the initial days and we have progressed,” he said, claiming that all female employees in the health sector had returned to work in Afghanistan and around 75 per cent were back to work in the education sector.

As for international recognition, he said: “What we are experiencing is that we are being treated as the official government […] and we are being basically being recognised as the de-facto Afghan government.”

“A formal announcement [of the Taliban government’s recognition] may come at a later stage,” he added.

The foreign minister maintained that the Taliban-led government met the international standards for a government to be recognised.

“Can anyone say that we have not fulfilled these requisites?” he asked rhetorically.

He remarked that there were different forms of government in different countries, and “we do not know which form to adopt for being recognised.”

To another question, he maintained that the present Taliban setup was inclusive and consisted of members from multiple ethnicities.

Erdoğan met with the heads of member states at the secretariat office in the historic Sultanahmet district ahead of the 8th Summit of the Turkic Council.

The ceremony was attended by Azerbaijani President Ilham Aliyev, Kazakh President Kassym-Jomart Tokayev, Kyrgyz President Sadyr Japarov and Uzbek President Shavkat Mirziyoyev.

Swedish Prime Minister Lofven to resign next week

Swedish Prime Minister Lofven to resign next week

Stockholm, NOV 7: Sweden’s Social Democratic Prime Minister Stefan Lofven will resign from office in the near future. A spokeswoman for Lofven told on Sunday that he would submit his application to this effect to Parliamentary President Andreas Norlen at the beginning of next week. Exactly when remained open.

The step had been expected. Lofven had announced in August that he would first retire as party leader and then as head of government.

In doing so, he wants to give his successor the opportunity to better position herself before the next Swedish parliamentary election in the late summer of 2022.

Finance Minister Magdalena Andersson was elected as the new party leader of the Social Democrats on Thursday. She is also to succeed Lofven in the country’s highest political office.

However, in view of the narrow majority in the Swedish parliament, she must first convince other parties not to oppose her in a parliamentary vote after Lofven’s resignation.

The Social Democrats have governed in Sweden for years together with the Greens in a minority government. Lofven has been Swedish prime minister since October 2014.

MOSCOW, NOV 6: Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov and his Iranian counterpart Hossein Amirabdollahian both expressed support for restoring a 2015 nuclear deal to its original form, the RIA news agency reported on Saturday, citing Russia’s foreign ministry.

President Ebrahim Raisi said on Thursday Iran would not back down “in any way” in the defence of its interests, after the sides announced that nuclear talks would resume on Nov. 29.
