Europa League: Tottenham’s Kane ‘delighted’ with 200th goal for Spurs

Striker crosses tally during 3-1 win against Ludogorets

Tottenham captain Harry Kane was delighted after scoring his 200th goal for the side in a 3-1 away win against Ludogorets in the UEFA Europa League 2020-21 on Thursday.

He opened the scoring for Jose Mourinho’s side with just 12 minutes on the clock when he headed home Lucas Moura’s corner to bring up his double century of Tottenham goals in his 300th match for the club.

“I’m delighted with that and I probably could have scored a couple more in that 45 minutes,” said Kane. “It’s a great milestone to reach and hopefully there are a few more to come.”

Lille’s Yusuf Yazici brought AC Milan and Zlatan Ibrahimovic down to earth with a bump on Thursday with all three goals in a 3-0 Europa League win over the seven-time European champions.

The 39-year-old Ibrahimovic had been one of the stories of the early part of the season after firing seven goals in four league games to take the Italian giants top of Serie A, but it was Yazici, who is yet to start in Ligue 1 this season, who stole the show with his hat-trick at the San Siro.

Yazici’s goals put Lille, who are unbeaten in all competitions this season, one point ahead of Milan who lost for the first time since football returned from the first coronavirus lockdown.

Celtic are bottom of Group H after being hammered 4-1 at home by Sparta Prague.

“I thought we could be more dangerous, but against such a fast team once we went 2-0 behind the game got complicated. They punished us for every mistake,” said Milan coach Stefano Pioli after his side’s 24-match unbeaten run came to an end.

“(Ibrahimovic) was not satisfied with the team’s performance nor his own.”

Yazici, 23, opened the scoring when he won and scored a soft-looking penalty in the 22nd minute.

He doubled the away side’s lead nine minutes after the break when his hopeful strike bobbled over Gianluigi Donnarumma’s early dive and then twisted the knife three minutes later when he confidently finished a counter attack.

Incredibly it was Yazici’s second Europa League hat-trick of the season following his treble in Lille’s 4-1 win over Sparta Prague in the opening round of fixtures, taking his European tally to six.

Kelechi Iheanacho was the star for Leicester City as they made it three wins from three with their 4-0 thumping of Portuguese side Braga in a match that was never in doubt from the moment the Nigerian opened the scoring in the 21st minute.

He collected his second with a long range effort three minutes after the break before providing the low cross for Dennis Praet to tap home the third and end the match as a contest.

James Maddison completed the scoring from close range with 12 minutes remaining as Brendan Rodgers’s went three points ahead of Braga at the top of Group G.

Fellow Premier League side Arsenal also maintained their 100 percent record with a 4-1 win over Molde of Norway.

Rangers were poised to make it three wins from three in Group D when they were 3-1 ahead at Benfica with 14 minutes remaining.

But despite losing Nicolas Otamendi to a straight red card with less than 20 minutes gone, two-time European champions Benfica fought back and in added time levelled when Darwin Nunez raced through and slotted home past Allan McGregor.

The pair are joined on seven points at the top of the group, four ahead of Lech Poznan who beat bottom side Standard Liege 3-1.

Qarabag lost 2-0 at Sivasspor to remain rooted to the bottom of Group I a day after their media manager was suspended by UEFA for reportedly calling for the killing of “all the Armenians, old and young, without distinction”.

The social media post in question came amid the conflict between Azerbaijan and Armenia in Nagorno-Karabakh.

Roma took control of Group A with a thumping 5-0 win over Cluj that put the leaders three points clear of the Romanians and Young Boys while fellow Italians Napoli also won, 2-1 at HNK Rijeka, to move level on six points with Group F leaders AZ Alkmaar and Real Sociedad.

La Liga leaders Sociedad beat Alkmaar 1-0, leaving the group on a knife edge with three matches remaining.

Biden overtakes Trump in Georgia vote count as race to the White House continues

Thousands of ballots are still left to be counted.

The outcome of the US presidential election remained in the balance on Friday as a handful of battleground states complete their vote counts and thousands of ballots are still left to be counted.

Former Vice President and Democrat Joe Biden overtook Republican President Donald Trump in the number of ballots counted in the battleground, a must-win state for Trump that has long been a Republican stronghold. Biden now has a 917-vote advantage.

As Biden moved closer to winning the White House, Trump adopted a fighting posture, making false claims to undermine a vote that was not going his way.

Biden has racked up at least 264 of the 270 electoral votes that he needs. Donald Trump has amassed 214 electoral votes so far, and is still in contention in several states that would afford the Republican incumbent a path to re-election.

States yet to finalise winner

  • Alaska – 3 votes (Trump leading convincingly)

  • Nevada – 6 votes (Biden leading with thin margin)

  • Pennsylvania – 20 votes (Trump leading with thin margin)

  • North Carolina – 15 votes (Trump leading)

  • Georgia – 16 votes (Biden leading with thin margin)

Expected to report final vote counts on Thursday night or Friday are Georgia (16 electoral votes), North Carolina (15), and Nevada (6).

However, mail-in ballots sent on or before Election Day in North Carolina can be counted until November 12.

Three days after Election Day, neither candidate had amassed the votes needed to win the White House. But Biden’s victories in the Great Lakes states left him at 264, meaning he was one battleground state away — any would do — from becoming president-elect.

By flipping yet another critical battleground state that Trump won four years ago, Biden placed himself in a comfortable lead, with only 6 electoral votes shy of the presidency.

Biden could reach the magic number to gain the White House with a win in either Georgia, North Carolina and Nevada, if he keeps Arizona. Trump needs to capture all three to stay competitive.

Nevada, where Biden is favoured, could put him precisely at the number needed to win, if he keeps Arizona. With more than 89 per cent of the vote counted, Biden was leading by less than 11,500 votes.

However, Pennsylvania is the biggest prize remaining, with 20 electoral votes. In the battle ground state of Georgia, Biden pulled ahead by 917 votes, according to AP, as counting continued.

Much of the delay has resulted from a flood of mail-in ballots due to the coronavirus pandemic — and those votes have tended to favour Democrats. If Biden's lead in Arizona holds, and he wins Nevada or Georgia, he would pass the threshold of 270 electoral votes.

Should Trump hold North Carolina and Georgia but lose Arizona, he must take Nevada as well as Pennsylvania to win.

Simply winning Pennsylvania — where Trump leads but faces a possible onslaught of pro-Biden mailed ballots — will not be enough for the president, even if he takes Alaska's three electoral votes as expected.

Much to Trump's chagrin, Pennsylvania has decided to allow mailed ballots sent by Election Day but received up to three days afterwards to be counted. Authorities expect to complete the count by Friday.

Another factor that could keep the battle alive: the Trump campaign has unleashed a legal blitz in key states vital to the incumbent's re-election.

It has sued to disqualify late-arriving ballots in Pennsylvania, sued in Nevada and Georgia over alleged irregularities, and has demanded a recount in Wisconsin.

Apple developing search engine to compete with Google: report

  • Move comes during antitrust scrutiny against Google

Apple has accelerated work to develop its own search engine that would allow the iPhone maker to offer an alternative to Google.

The report, citing unnamed sources, said signs of the search engine technology have begun to appeal in its iOS 14 operating system.

The move comes amid increased scrutiny by antitrust enforcers, who sued Google in the United States over its dominance in search technology.

As part of the lawsuit, the Department of Justice noted that Google pays Apple billions of dollars to be the principal search engine on iOS devices.

Apple did not immediately respond to an AFP query. Reports in the past have said Apple had begun some in-house research on creating a search engine.

According to the FT, Apple two years ago hired Google’s head of search, John Giannandrea, in a move designed to help build artificial intelligence capabilities and its Siri virtual assistant.

Jacinda Ardern reappointed as New Zealand’s prime minister

Jacinda Ardern has been formally appointed as the Prime Minister of New Zealand on Friday, returning to the office for a second term after securing a landslide victory in the country’s general election last month.

Ardern and her ministers were sworn in by Governor-General Dame Patsy Reddy during a ceremony at Wellington’s Government House.

“I would say simply that sitting at this table is Aotearoa New Zealand,” Ardern said, gesturing to her gathered team, in which women and Maori are strongly represented.

“They collectively represent a range of different perspectives, huge talent, enormous experience and, as you would expect in any time of crisis, a huge commitment to serving this country.”

PM Arden’s liberal Labour Party won 49 per cent of the party vote in the election, setting a record for becoming the first party to win enough seats since 1996. On the other hand, the opponent centre-right National Party could only secure 27 per cent of the vote along with 35 seats.

The newly-appointed cabinet has been touted for its diversity, as almost half of the members are female, while about 10% of the members identify as openly LGBTQ. New Zealand’s new deputy Prime Minister Grant Robertson also identifies as a member of the LGBTQ community.

“This is a cabinet and an executive that is based on merit that also happens to be incredibly diverse and I am proud of that,” Ardern said Monday as she announced her cabinet. “They reflect New Zealand that elected them.”

Dangerous game of targeting institutions!

The trend of politics in Pakistan is becoming dangerous, both the government and the opposition are pursuing their own interests while enjoying politics and governance, while the people are being pushed into the mill of inflation and unemployment that it has become difficult even for white-clad people to maintain their dignity.

The job of the government and the opposition is to discuss public issues and find solutions to their problems, but both of them not only seem completely oblivious to these important points but also try to make the institutions controversial by dragging them into the politics of blame.

Surprisingly, this work is done by anti-national external forces, for which they carry out organized propaganda campaigns and buy anti-patriotic elements from within the country and join them, but here the important politicians of their own dear country do this work. Which politics and what good of the country and nation is hidden in it, it is clearly an attempt to weaken the institutions and spread chaos in the country which is a very dangerous process.

It is clear that constitutionally the role of the armed forces is to protect geographical boundaries and provide assistance when called upon by the government, but traditionally the armed forces in Pakistan have played a role in balancing political crises. It has been the policy of political leaders in every era of power to work together with the military leadership in the name of national stability, especially when General Pervez Musharraf took matters into his own hands; all the members of the opposition were among those who distributed sweets.

Today, the same political leaders are talking about staying within the constitutional limits and not interfering in politics. On the one hand, they prevented from interfering in politics; on the other hand, they try to put all their shortcomings in the account of national institutions. Those who spread this impression, whether government ministers or opposition leaders are not benefactors of both the state and state institutions.

The Fifth Generation Hybrid War seeks to create gaps and misunderstandings between the institutions and the people, which is currently being worked on in the country, This impression is being reinforced not only by the opposition but also by government ministers.

Indeed, the Armed Forces of Pakistan are capable of meeting the requirements of the defense of the homeland and responding to any external aggression and thwarting any conspiracy of the enemy to undermine the security of the country by virtue of their professionalism. Unfortunately, despite the ongoing political confrontation in the country and the demands of national security and national interest, Pakistan's forces are not being avoided from being dragged into politics, while Army Chief General Qamar Javed Bajwa has assured the national political leadership that the Armed forces of Pakistan avoid getting involved in politics and resolve your own administrative and political issues in the relevant forums.

Despite this, especially the opposition leaders are not shying away from targeting the army in the politics of the blame game, while our machiavellian enemy India, waiting in this atmosphere of confrontation, is getting a rare opportunity to celebrate and foster more conspiracies against the security of Pakistan.

There is no denying the fact that the Pakistani opposition is fueling India's anti-Pakistan propaganda. Former Speaker National Assembly Sardar Ayaz Sadiq's contradictory and indecent statement in the National Assembly regarding Abhinandan, an Indian prisoner of war, has given India a rare opportunity to make the Pakistan army controversial. Instead of being ashamed of his statement and apologizing to the nation, Sardar Ayaz Sadiq is threatening to reveal more secrets by offering explanations, PML-N leader Khurram Dastgir also said that should not go to the bottom of the matter, otherwise, they will make terrible revelations.

The public is fed up with the threats to the state’s national security agencies. Let the Leader of the Opposition do what he has to do now. Let us see how much you will fall by breaking the repeated pledge to protect national secrets.

It is a shame that politicians used to quarrel with each other, but now they are pursuing their national security. A self-interested political party is speaking against the integrity of Pakistan to please its leaders. The laxity of the leadership of national institutions is beginning to encourage the anti-national forces. So, the national security agencies should not be lenient to even those who are hostile to the country, especially those who sit outside the country and speak out against Pakistan every day should be dealt with severely.

The country's political leadership will never be able to move forward in politics with the dangerous game of targeting institutions, so the country's political leadership should realize that if this country and its institutions exist, so is their politics, and if there is no country, then their politics will not exist and there will be no pleasures to which everyone has become accustomed.

'They are trying to steal the election': Trump erupts as Biden closes in on US presidency

US President Donald Trump erupted on Thursday in a tirade of unsubstantiated claims that he has been cheated out of winning the US election as vote counting across battleground states showed Democrat Joe Biden steadily closing in on victory.

“They are trying to steal the election,” an increasingly isolated Trump said in an extraordinary statement at the White House two days after polls closed.

Providing no evidence and taking no questions afterward from reporters, Trump spent nearly 17 minutes making the kind of incendiary statements about the country's democratic process that have never been heard before from a US president.

According to Trump, Democrats were using “illegal votes” to “steal the election from us”.

“If you count the legal votes, I easily win,” he claimed. “They're trying to rig an election. And we can't let that happen.”

Beyond the rhetoric, Trump's complaints were specifically targeting the integrity of the huge number of ballots mailed in, rather than cast in person on Election Day.

The big shift to postal ballots this year reflected the desire of voters to avoid risking exposure to Covid-19 in crowded polling stations during a pandemic that has already killed close to 235,000 Americans.

However, because Trump often denied the seriousness of the virus and told his supporters not to support mail-in ballots, far fewer Republicans took advantage of the option, compared with Democrats.

Biden closes in

Several major US television networks cut away from live coverage of Trump's event and there were signs of cracks in Republican support.

Representative Will Hurd called Trump's call to stop vote-counting “dangerous and wrong,” saying it “undermines the very foundation this nation was built upon”.

And conservative Rupert Murdoch's powerful media empire appeared to shift tone, with his New York Post calling Trump's fraud allegations “baseless” and Fox News refusing Republican pressure to rescind its projection that Trump would lose Arizona, vital for his chances.

Trump's rant came as returns from still undeclared states around the country showed Biden trending toward victory.

Biden, 77, was just one or at most two battleground states away from securing the majority to take the White House. Trump, 74, needed an increasingly unlikely combination of wins in multiple states to stay in power.

Biden, who has promised to heal a country bruised by Trump's extraordinarily polarising four years in power, appealed for “people to stay calm”.

“We have no doubt that when the count is finished, Senator (Kamala) Harris and I will be declared the winners,” he said in comments to reporters in his hometown of Wilmington.

“The process is working,” he said. “The count is being completed. And we will know soon.”

All about Pennsylvania?

In Georgia, a generally Republican state, Trump had a razor thin and fast vanishing lead of fewer than 1,900 votes. In Arizona and Nevada, Biden held on to slim leads. If Biden wins both those states he would also win the presidency.

But the biggest piece of the puzzle was Pennsylvania, where Trump's early lead was again steadily draining away, as election officials homed in on processing mail-in ballots, which are more typically cast by Biden supporters.

The Democratic hopeful currently has 253 of the 538 electoral college votes divvied up between the country's 50 states. He has 264 with the inclusion of Arizona, which Fox News and the Associated Press have called in his favor, but other major organisations have not.

If Biden took Pennsylvania, he would grab 20 more electoral college votes, thereby instantly topping the necessary 270 for overall victory.

Latest results showed Trump's lead in the state had shrunk to around 42,000 votes, with most votes yet to be counted coming from Democratic stronghold Philadelphia.

Protests across country

Trump's campaign continued to insist that the president has a way to win, citing pockets of Republican support yet to be counted.

But Trump's overwhelming focus was on claiming, without evidence, that he was a victim of mass fraud.

Trump prematurely declared victory on Wednesday and threatened to seek Supreme Court intervention to stop vote-counting but it has continued nonetheless.

Since then, his team fanned out across the battleground states challenging the results in court and his supporters converged outside election offices in several cities.

In Las Vegas, Trump backers wearing red “Make America Great Again” hats demanded to see ballots being processed.

Brando Madrigal said he wanted to verify that the votes are “not coming from the people who died with Covid, people who are out of state, people who don't have the ability to vote because they don't have the papers”.

But while Trump was demanding that counting be halted in Georgia and Pennsylvania — where he is leading — his supporters and campaign insisted that it continue in Arizona and Nevada, where he is trailing.

Bob Bauer, a lawyer for the Biden campaign, dismissed the slew of lawsuits as “meritless”.

“All of this is intended to create a large cloud,” Bauer said. “But it's not a very thick cloud. We see through it. So do the courts and so do election officials.“

US election hanging on results of key states as Biden makes gains

The race is neck and neck in Georgia where 99pc of the estimated votes have been tallied.

WASHINGTON - The outcome of the US presidential election remained in the balance late on Thursday as a handful of battleground states complete their vote counts.

Democrat Joe Biden has racked up at least 264 of the 270 electoral votes that he needs. Donald Trump has amassed 214 electoral votes so far, and is still in contention in several states that would afford the Republican incumbent a path to re-election.

Nevada, where Biden is favored, could put him precisely at the number needed to win, if he keeps Arizona. With more than 89 per cent of the vote counted, Biden was leading by less than 11,500 votes.

However, Pennsylvania is the biggest prize remaining, with 20 electoral votes. In the battle ground state of Georgia, with 99pc of the estimated vote tallied so far, Trump has 49.4pc and Biden has 49.4pc of the vote, according to Edison Research.

Much of the delay has resulted from a flood of mail-in ballots due to the coronavirus pandemic — and those votes have tended to favor Democrats.

Michigan

Biden carried Michigan and its 16 electoral votes. The flip from red back to blue was a huge blow to Trump, whose victories in Michigan, Wisconsin and Pennsylvania in 2016 sent him to the White House.

Biden’s campaign had particularly focused on turning out Black voters in Detroit, who failed to show up for Hillary Clinton in the numbers that Barack Obama received during his two presidential bids.

Despite needing to win Michigan, Trump took frequent swipes at the state’s Democratic governor, Gretchen Whitmer, who was the target of an alleged kidnapping plot that was foiled by federal law enforcement. Chants of “Lock her up!” toward Whitmer echoed at Trump’s rally, and he railed against the governor on Twitter for her cautious approach to the coronavirus pandemic.

Wisconsin

Biden defeated President Trump in battleground Wisconsin, securing the state’s 10 electoral votes and reclaiming a key part of the blue wall that slipped away from Democrats four years ago.

The Associated Press called Wisconsin for Biden after election officials in the state said all outstanding ballots had been counted, save for a few hundred in one township and an expected small number of provisional ballots.

Trump’s campaign has requested a recount. Statewide recounts in Wisconsin have historically changed the vote tally by only a few hundred votes; Biden leads by .624 percentage points out of nearly 3.3 million ballots counted.

In 2016, Trump won Wisconsin by fewer than 23,000 votes, a breakthrough that along with wins in Michigan and Pennsylvania helped hand him his first term in the White House. Democrats were determined to reclaim Wisconsin, a state that before Trump hadn’t gone for a Republican since Ronald Reagan in 1984.

Arizona

Democrat Joe Biden won Arizona and its 11 electoral votes, serving a huge blow to Trump’s chances for reelection. Arizona has backed a Democratic presidential candidate only once in the last 72 years.

Biden’s campaign had focused on Arizona as part of its expanded battleground map through the Sun Belt, citing demographic changes, new residents and realignment away from Republicans among key suburban voters.

Arizona is among the more than half a dozen states that will help determine which candidate gets the 270 electoral votes to capture the White House.
