How Much Water Should You Drink Per Day?

Your body is about 60 percent water.

The body constantly loses water throughout the day, mostly through urine and sweat but also from regular body functions like breathing. To prevent dehydration, you need to get plenty of water from drink and food every day.

There are many different opinions on just how much water you should be drinking every day.

Health experts commonly recommend eight 8-ounce glasses, which equals about 2 liters, or half a gallon a day. This is called the 8×8 rule and is very easy to remember.

However, some experts believe that you need to sip on water constantly throughout the day, even when you’re not thirsty.

As with most things, this depends on the individual. Many factors (both internal and external) ultimately affect how much water you need.

This article takes a look at some water intake studies to separate fact from fiction and explains how to easily stay well hydrated for your individual needs.

How much water do you need?

How Much Water Should You Drink Per Day?

How much water you need depends on a lot of things and varies from person to person. For adults, the general recommendation from The U.S. National Academies of Sciences, Engineering, and Medicine is about:

  • 11.5 cups (2.7 liters) a day for women
  • 15.5 cups (3.7 liters) a day for men

This includes fluids from water, beverages like teas and juice, and from food. You get an average of 20 percent of your water from the foods you eat (12).

You might need more water than someone else. How much water you need also depends on:

  • Where you live. You will need more water in hot, humid, or dry areas. You’ll also need more water if you live in the mountains or at a high altitude (3Trusted Source).
  • Your diet. If you drink a lot of coffee and other caffeinated beverages you might lose more water through extra urination. You will likely also need to drink more water if your diet is high in salty, spicy, or sugary foods. Or, more water is necessary if you don’t eat a lot of hydrating foods that are high in water like fresh or cooked fruits and vegetables.
  • The temperature or season. You may need more water in warmer months than cooler ones due to perspiration.
  • Your environment. If you spend more time outdoors in the sun or hot temperatures or in a heated room, you might feel thirstier faster.
  • How active you are. If you are active during the day or walk or stand a lot, you’ll need more water than someone who’s sitting at a desk. If you exercise or do any intense activity, you will need to drink more to cover water loss.
  • Your health. If you have an infection or a fever, or if you lose fluids through vomiting or diarrhea, you will need to drink more water. If you have a health condition like diabetes you will also need more water. Some medications like diuretics can also make you lose water.
  • Pregnant or breastfeeding. If you’re pregnant or nursing your baby, you’ll need to drink extra water to stay hydrated. Your body is doing the work for two (or more), after all.
SUMMARY

Many factors affect how much water you need to stay healthy such as your health, activity, and environment.

Many people claim that if you don’t stay hydrated throughout the day, your energy levels and brain function start to suffer.

There are plenty of studies to support this.

One study in women showed that a fluid loss of 1.36 percent after exercise impaired mood and concentration and increased the frequency of headaches (4Trusted Source).

Another study in China that followed 12 men in university found that not drinking water for 36 hours had noticeable effects on fatigue, attention and focus, reaction speed, and short-term memory (5).

Even mild dehydration can reduce physical performance. A clinical study on older, healthy men reported that just a 1 percent loss of body water reduced their muscle strength, power, and endurance (6).

Losing 1 percent of body weight might not seem like a lot, but it’s a significant amount of water to lose. This usually happens when you’re sweating a lot or in a very warm room and not drinking enough water.

SUMMARY

Mild dehydration caused by exercise or heat can have negative effects on both your physical and mental performance.

There are many claims that drinking more water may reduce body weight by increasing your metabolism and curbing appetite.

According to a study, drinking more water than usual correlated to a decrease in body weight and body composition scores. (7Trusted Source).

Another review of studies found that chronic dehydration was associated with obesity, diabetes, cancer, and cardiovascular disease (8Trusted Source).

Researchers in another older study estimated that drinking 68 ounces (2 liters) in one day increased energy expenditure by about 23 calories per day due to a thermogenic response, or a faster metabolism (9Trusted Source). The amount was incremental but could add up over time.

Drinking water about a half hour before meals can also reduce the number of calories you end up consuming (10Trusted Source). This might happen because it’s easy for the body to mistake thirst for hunger.

One study showed that people who drank 17 ounces (500 mL) of water before each meal lost 44% more weight over 12 weeks, compared to those who didn’t (11Trusted Source).

Overall, it seems that drinking adequate amounts of water, particularly before meals, may give you a boost in managing appetite and maintaining a healthy body weight, especially when combined with a healthy eating plan.

What’s more, drinking plenty of water has a number of other health benefits.

SUMMARY

Drinking water can cause slight, temporary increases in metabolism, and drinking it about a half hour before each meal can help you eat fewer calories.

Both of these effects can contribute to weight loss in some people.

Drinking enough water is required for your body to function in general. Several health problems may also respond well to increased water intake:

  • Constipation. Increasing water intake can help with constipation, a very common problem (1213).
  • Urinary tract infections. Recent studies have shown that increasing water consumption may help prevent recurring urinary tract and bladder infections (14Trusted Source15)
  • Kidney stones. An older study concluded that high fluid intake decreased the risk of kidney stones, though more research is needed (16Trusted Source).
  • Skin hydration. Studies show that more water leads to better skin hydration, though more research is needed on improved clarity and effects on acne (17Trusted Source18)
SUMMARY

Drinking more water and staying adequately hydrated may help with some health problems, such as constipation, urinary and bladder infections, kidney stones, and skin dehydration.

Plain water is not the only drink that contributes to your fluid balance. Other drinks and foods can have a significant effect.

One myth is that caffeinated drinks, such as coffee or tea, don’t help you hydrate because caffeine is a diuretic.

In fact, studies show that the diuretic effect of these beverages is weak, but they can cause extra urination in some people (19Trusted Source). However, even caffeinated drinks help add water to your body overall.

Most foods contain water in varying levels. Meat, fish, eggs, and especially fruits and vegetables all contain water.

Together, coffee or tea and water-rich foods can help maintain your fluid balance.

SUMMARY

Other beverages can contribute to fluid balance, including coffee and tea. Most foods also contain water.

Maintaining water balance is essential for your survival.

For this reason, your body has a sophisticated system for controlling when and how much you drink. When your total water content goes below a certain level, thirst kicks in.

This is carefully balanced by mechanisms similar to breathing — you don’t need to consciously think about it.

Your body knows how to balance its water levels and when to signal you to drink more.

While thirst may be a reliable indicator of dehydration, relying on feeling thirsty may not be adequate for optimal health or exercise performance (20Trusted Source).

At the time thirst strikes, you may be already feeling the effects of too little hydration such as fatigue or headaches.

Using your urine color as your guide can be more helpful to know if you’re drinking enough (21). Aim for pale, clear urine.

There really is no science behind the 8×8 rule. It is completely arbitrary (122Trusted Source). That said, certain circumstances may call for increased water intake.

The most important one may be during times of increased sweating. This includes exercise and hot weather, especially in a dry climate.

If you’re sweating a lot, make sure to replenish the lost fluid with water. Athletes doing long, intense exercises may also need to replenish electrolytes, like sodium and other minerals, along with water.

Your water need increases during pregnancy and breastfeeding.

You also need more water when you have a fever and when you’re vomiting or have diarrhea. If you desire to lose weight, consider upping your water intake too.

Furthermore, older people may need to consciously watch their water intake because the thirst mechanisms can start to malfunction with aging. Studies show that adults over 65 years old are at a higher risk for dehydration (23).

SUMMARY

Most people don’t need to focus too much on their water intake, as the body has an automatic thirst signal.

However, certain circumstances do call for increased attention to how much water you’re drinking.

At the end of the day, no one can tell you exactly how much water you need. This depends on many factors.

Try experimenting to see what works best for you. Some people may function better with more water than usual, while for others it only results in more frequent trips to the bathroom.

If you want to keep things simple, these guidelines should apply to the majority of people:

  1. Drink often enough throughout the day for clear, pale urine.
  2. When you’re thirsty, drink.
  3. During high heat and exercise and other mentioned indications, make sure to drink enough to compensate for the lost or extra needed fluids.
  4. That’s it!

Babar Azam named Pakistan Test captain, takes charge of all three formats

Pakistan named Babar Azam as their new Test captain on Tuesday, putting the batsman in charge of teams across all formats.

Azam replaces Azhar Ali, who led Pakistan to a 1-0 series defeat in England earlier this year. Ali led Pakistan in eight Tests since he was appointed captain last year. He won two home Test matches against Sri Lanka and Bangladesh but lost in Australia 2-0 and in England 1-0.

Azam is the third Pakistan Test captain in 13 months after Sarfaraz Ahmed was sacked in October last year.

The Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) made the announcement after Azam led the team to Twenty-20 and one-day international series victories over Zimbabwe on home soil. According to a statement by the PCB, the decision was confirmed after subsequent meetings with Ali and Babar.

“As we are looking into the future, it is appropriate that we appoint him the captain now so that he continues to grow stronger with every match,” PCB chairman Ehsan Mani said in a statement.

“I wish Babar all the best and remain optimistic that he will help Pakistan cricket make an upward movement across all formats not only through his performance but also with his positive attitude and result-oriented approach.”

Mani also lauded Ali for “stepping up […] by captaining the side in what was a historic first home Test series in over a decade”.

“I believe Azhar still has a lot of cricket left in him and Pakistan cricket can continue to make the best use of his experience and knowledge as specialist top-order batsman moving forward,” Mani was quoted as saying by the PCB press release.

Azam has been a prolific scorer for Pakistan and currently ranks among the top five batsmen in all three formats.

The 26-year-old’s first assignment as Test skipper will be the ICC World Test Championship matches against New Zealand, which will be played in Mount Maunganui and Christchurch from December 26-30 and January 3-7, respectively.

“I feel truly honoured to have been appointed Test captain and join some of the most iconic players who have captained Pakistan in the purest format of the game,” said Azam, who took charge of Pakistan’s limited-overs teams earlier this year.

“I am ready and prepared to take up the additional responsibility and the fact which gives me additional confidence is that I can do the job is the experience that is available to me in the changing room in the shape of the players and support staff.”

Azam also thanked his predecessor Ali for taking up the “difficult” task of captaining the Test team.

“I want to thank Azhar Ali for the way he captained the team in the last season, which was a difficult one, but I know that he will leave no stone unturned in giving his very best to the team,” the skipper was quoted as saying by the PCB.

Ali congratulated Azam on his appointment as Test captain and assured him of his “full support”.

“May Allah help you achieve many glorious victories for Pakistan,” Ali said in a tweet.

Army inquiry report on Karachi incident 'rejected': Nawaz Sharif

PML-N supremo and former prime minister Nawaz Sharif on Tuesday termed the report of the inquiry carried out by the army into the events leading up to and following the arrest of his son-in-law retired Capt Mohammad Safdar in Karachi as a "cover-up", saying the report was "rejected".

"Inquiry report on Karachi incident is a cover-up scapegoating juniors and shielding the real culprits. Report “Rejected”," the ousted premier tweeted.

No other leader from the PML-N has commented on the party's official stance on the report.

Nawaz's statement comes hours after the military's media wing announced that officials of the Inter Services Intelligence (ISI) and Pakistan Rangers, Sindh, involved in the "Karachi incident" had been removed pending further departmental proceedings for acting "overzealously".

"The court of inquiry has established that on the night of Oct 18/Oct 19, officers from Pakistan Rangers (Sindh) and ISI sector Headquarters Karachi were considerably seized with the fall out of the desecration of Mazar-e-Quaid.

"They were under increasing public pressure to ensure prompt action as per the law. Assessing the response of police authorities against this developing yet volatile situation to be slow and wanting, in a charged environment, the concerned officers decided to act, rather overzealously," the ISPR statement said.

The concerned officers "were indeed experienced enough to have acted more prudently and could have avoided creating an unwarranted situation that led to the misunderstanding between the two state institutions," an Inter-Services Public Relations (ISPR) statement said.

The announcement was made after the court of inquiry constituted to redress the grievances of the Sindh inspector general on the orders of Chief of Army Staff Gen Qamar Javed Bajwa was completed, according to the ISPR.

Nawaz's use of the term "rejected" in his tweet is an apparent reference to the April 29, 2017, tweet sent out by former ISPR Director General Maj Gen Asif Ghafoor which had "rejected" the directives issued by the Prime Minister's Office when Nawaz was the premier regarding an inquiry report concerning a story published in daily Dawn. The story reported the details of a high-level civil-military meeting.

The following month, the Pakistan Army had "withdrawn" the tweet, saying it had become infructuous.

Fall out of Safdar arrest

Last month, the ISPR said the army chief had taken notice of and ordered an immediate inquiry into the "Karachi incident".

At the time, the ISPR did not specify which incident it was referring to. However, the statement came minutes after PPP Chairperson Bilawal Bhutto-Zardari called on Gen Bajwa and ISI Director General Faiz Hameed to investigate the circumstances of Safdar's arrest in Karachi last month.

On October 19, PML-N leader Safdar, who was staying at a Karachi hotel with his wife, PML-N Vice President Maryam Nawaz, was arrested for "violating the sanctity of Quaid-i-Azam Mohammad Ali Jinnah's mausoleum" a day after the Pakistan Democratic Movement (PDM) had staged a rally in the city.

Following Safdar's arrest, a purported voice message by PML-N leader and former Sindh governor Muhammad Zubair was shared by a journalist in which Zubair alleged that the Sindh inspector general of police was kidnapped and forced to register the first information report against Maryam, her husband Safdar and 200 others for violating the sanctity of the Quaid's mausoleum.

In the audio clip circulating on Twitter, Zubair purportedly said that Chief Minister Murad Ali Shah confirmed to him that police was pressured into making the arrest. "When they (police) refused to do that, Rangers kidnapped [the IGP]," Zubair had said.

Maryam had also alleged that the Sindh police chief was forcibly "taken to the sector commander's office and asked to sign on the arrest orders".

The Sindh chief minister had addressed a press conference later and said that a ministerial committee would investigate the mysterious "circumstances" that led to the early morning raid on Maryam's hotel room and arrest of her husband, but defended the police action against Safdar once an FIR had been lodged against him.

However, the presser failed to convince the police hierarchy that was in low morale following the episode and which applied for leaves en masse. Later, Sindh IGP Mushtaq Mahar decided to defer his own leave for 10 days and ordered his officers to do the same after Gen Bajwa took notice of the incident, spoke to Bilawal over the phone and promised an immediate inquiry.

Malaysian High Commissioner praises RCCI for promoting trade activities

RAWALPINDI, NOV 10 - The Malaysian High Commissioner Ikram Bin Muhammad Ibrahim paid a visit to the Rawalpindi Chamber of Commerce and Industry (RCCI) on Tuesday.

RCCI President Mohammad Nasir Mirza, Senior Vice President Osman Ashraf, Vice President Shahraiz A  Malik, members of the executive committee and officials from the High-Commission and members of the RCCI were also present on the occasion.

Addressing the business community, the High Commissioner lauded RCCI efforts in promoting trade activities in the region.  High Commissioner Ikram Bin Muhammad Ibrahim also appreciated RCCI for its recent tree plantation drive and assured full support from the embassy in this regard.

He said, there is a need to intensify efforts for improving two-way trade between Pakistan and Malaysia that would bring far better results for their economies.

Both countries have good potential to enhance cooperation in many fields including auto-mobile, construction, pharmaceutical, halal food, tourism, telecommunication and renewable energy. Malaysia's famous auto brand Proton will make its pre launch in December 2020 in Karachi, he added.

We should encourage frequent exchange of trade delegations to explore all untapped areas of potential cooperation and added that Malaysia has relaxed its visa policy amid Covid-19.

He assured full cooperation and assistance for RCCI upcoming events including Rawal International Expo 2021 and other events.

He informed that Pakistan and Malaysia were the first two Islamic countries that had signed the FTA a long time ago, but the bilateral trade was still confined to few products. He said there was an urgent need to focus on diversification of trade for improving trade figures.

In his welcome address, President RCCI Mohammad Nasir Mirza said that Pak-Malaysia are enjoying cordial relations and stressed that both countries should focus on new products to improve two-way trade. He also emphasized on further cementing the trade ties and exploring new sectors. He also shared an update on RCCI ongoing activities and future programs. He informed that RCCI is going to organize Gwadar Business Conference focusing on Central Asian Republics (CARs), Build 2020 Construction Trade Fair and Rawal Expo in near future.

Mohammad Nasir Mirza said that exchange of trade delegations is direly needed to boost the bilateral trade ties and volume. However, as Corona hit economies all over the world we should not stop here and increase virtual platforms for improved networking and Ecommerce to support businesses.

He said many Pakistani products including rice, wheat, mangoes, halal food, seafood, meat products, cutlery and sports goods, spices, handicrafts, light engineering goods, hospital and surgical equipment, pharmaceuticals and gems and jewelry could find a good market in Malaysia. Later the High Commissioner planted a sapling in the chamber premises to mark RCCI Tree Plantation Drive 2020. Ends PRO RCCI.

Politics' point of no return is dictatorship!

The PDM's rally in Karachi after Gujranwala has been a big power show in terms of its size, but government ministers are adamant that the people are not ready to be part of the opposition movement. Of course, governments do not go from the sea to the pomp of human beings, but traditionally governments are weakened by the full aggression of the opposition.

As the opposition movement gains momentum, it will be a loss-making deal for the government, so it is better to resolve political issues through dialogue, while the government is taking ruthless steps to crush the PDM movement. Political tensions in the country seem to be escalating into a confrontation.

This kind of political confrontation has led to the provision of extra-constitutional measures to turn democracy upside down. Political leaders have not learned any lesson from past mistakes and even today they are happy to try to spoil the death of democracy like in the past by finding ways to fight with each other.

Unfortunately, the claimants of democracy in the beloved homeland have been the cause of the decline of democracy, so the vehicle of democracy is coming to a standstill and is moving towards the destination by pushing, to the extent that democracy is still present in the country today. But practically this is not the case; everyone knows who is the source of power and where decisions are made.

Therefore, the political leadership seems to be prostrating at the door of the ruling forces to gain power. In a meeting with the parliamentary leaders of the opposition parties, the Army Chief reiterated his commitment to abide by the constitution and laws and to keep Pakistan Armed Forces out of politics.

However, in the politics of blame game, the leaders of the government and opposition parties have begun to engage the state institutions themselves in the process of confrontational politics. While this seems to be exacerbating the political tensions; it is not far-fetched that it will pose the same threats to the system as in the past.

There is no denying the fact that the army should not have a role in politics and the army does not want to be a part of politics, but the political parties have been instrumental in forcing the army to play this role, as long as political parties aren’t free from family dictatorship, parliament is not elevated, and political parties do not give up the practice of entering power through the back door, until then the restoration of full democracy in the country is not possible.

The opposition is not protesting for the restoration of democracy, but for adopting unconstitutional means to save itself and gain power. In a democratic system, governments are not overthrown, but elected and constitutionally housed by parliament. There is a mechanism for sending, but it seems that both the government and the opposition do not want to adopt a democratic approach, even though the opposition has highly experienced political leaders, yet undemocratic attitudes seem to prevail.

The opposition is on the agenda of overthrowing the government in any way. It is not so easy for the opposition to get the resignation of Imran Khan. If governments go through protests, then the gift of dictatorship is given.

While the opposition is pursuing an unconstitutional approach to overthrow the government, and since the PTI came to power, the government's statement that it will not spare the thieves and robbers and will bring them back and lock them in the C-class jail is limited. Prime Minister Imran Khan should fulfill his political agenda but he should also take care of the welfare of the people.

At present, the economic situation of the country is so bad that due to inflation, economic misery, and mismanagement, the people are overwhelmed but it does not reach the ears of government ministers. The advisers to the Prime Minister have no idea that superficial measures alone will not solve so many complex economic problems, it will have to clarify effective strategies along with activating its administration, using the so-called Tiger Force as an institution like government machinery to achieve results is tantamount to self-deception. So, no progress will be made until the right direction of the basic details of the economy is set.

Half the term of the PTI government has come to an end. Given the current situation, the rest of the term will also be spent in confrontation and bad governance. The chances of the opposition blocking protest politics, and any better performance by the government are slim. The democratic process is also one step ahead and two steps back.

The political system and administrative affairs will not be able to move forward in such an intense confrontational environment. Therefore, to ensure that national state institutions abide by the Constitution and the law, it is necessary to promote the politics of tolerance and politeness in the ranks of the government and the opposition in order to create and prevent democracy from being harmed in any way. If the politics of the country continues to be pushed towards the point of no return, then democratic institutions will be rounded up in the name of democracy and the path to dictatorship will be paved.

Australian High Commission sponsored five-day cricket training for visually impaired women

ISLAMABAD, NOV 10 (DN) – The Australian High Commission sponsored a five-day cricket training for visually impaired women and girls from across Pakistan, organised in collaboration with the Pakistan Blind Cricket Council (PBCC) on 5-10 November.

The training builds on Australia’s support to PBCC in the formation of Pakistan’s first blind women cricket team in 2018, which played its first international Twenty20 game last year.

Speaking at the award-giving ceremony at the conclusion of the training today, the Australian High Commissioner to Pakistan Dr Geoffrey Shaw shared that Australia’s support aims to provide more women and girls with disabilities the opportunity to enjoy sport, compete and demonstrate their ability.

“Sport can help reduce gender stereotypes and negative perceptions associated with people with disabilities. Australia and Pakistan share a passion for cricket, so we are happy to support the Pakistan Blind Cricket Council’s efforts to bring women and girls living with disabilities into the sport,” Dr Shaw added.

Coach Tahir, who coached the national blind men’s team, helped these players push their boundaries.

The Chairman of Pakistan Blind Cricket Council, Syed Sultan Shah, said, “Cricket for the blind is a highly competitive game which enables people with visual impairment to become people of vision – a vision of an accessible future full of exciting opportunities for all.”

Two blind factory workers invented blind cricket in Melbourne, Australia, in 1922 when they improvised the game using a tin can containing rocks. A few years later, in 1928, the first sports ground and clubhouse for blind cricket was built at Kooyong in Melbourne.=DN
