Kabul airport blast kills at least 13, including children: Taliban official

Kabul airport blast kills at least 13, including children: Taliban official

KABUL, AUG 26: An explosion outside Kabul airport on Thursday killed at least 13 people, including children, and wounded many Taliban guards, a Taliban official told Reuters.

The Russian Foreign Ministry said a second explosion went off outside the airport in the Afghan capital, adding that at least 13 were killed and 15 injured.

What we know so far

  • Two explosions went off outside the Kabul airport.
  • At least 13 people have been killed and more than 15 injured.
  • US officials say one of the explosions appears to be a suicide bomb.

A United States official said US service members were among the wounded, adding he was citing an initial report and cautioning that it could change. He said there were casualties but did not know how many or of what nationality.

Kabul's Emergency Hospital said in a tweet that it has received more than 30 patients so far while six others were already dead on arrival.

Thousands of people have been gathering outside the airport in recent days. Western troops are racing to evacuate foreigners and Afghans who helped Western countries during the 20-year war against the Taliban, and to get out themselves by an Aug 31 deadline.

Pentagon spokesman John Kirby said one blast occurred near the airport's Abbey Gate and the other close to the nearby Baron Hotel. Two US officials said at least one of the explosions appeared to be from a suicide bombing.

“We can confirm that the explosion at the Abbey Gate was the result of a complex attack that resulted in a number of US & civilian casualties,” Kirby said on Twitter. “We can also confirm at least one other explosion at or near the Baron Hotel, a short distance from Abbey Gate.”

A US official told Reuters as many as three US service members were among those hurt, and that US casualty numbers were expected to increase, according to initial information. At least one of the US personnel was seriously hurt, an official said.

The US Embassy in Kabul described “a large explosion” and said there had been reports of gunfire.

US and allied officials have said they had intelligence that suicide bombers were threatening to attack the airport.

US President Joe Biden has been briefed on the explosion, according to a White House official.

Biden was in a meeting with security officials about the situation in Afghanistan when the explosion was first reported, according to a person familiar with the matter.

Britain's defence ministry said it was working urgently to establish what had happened at Kabul airport following reports of an explosion.

“We are working urgently to establish what has happened in Kabul and its impact on the ongoing evacuation effort,” the defence ministry said on Twitter.

“Our primary concern remains the safety of our personnel, British citizens and the citizens of Afghanistan. We are in close contact with our US and other Nato allies at an operational level on the immediate response to this incident.”

Western nations warn citizens at airport

Earlier today, Western nations warned their citizens to immediately leave the surrounds of Kabul airport over a terrorist threat, as thousands of people try to reach a dwindling number of evacuation flights.

The US government and its allies raised the alarm with a series of coordinated and specific advisories for their citizens to avoid the airport.

“Those at the Abbey Gate, East Gate, or North Gate now should leave immediately,” said the US State Department, citing unspecified “security threats”.

Australia's department of foreign affairs said there was an “ongoing and very high threat of terrorist attack”. “Do not travel to Kabul Hamid Karzai International Airport. If you're in the area of the airport, move to a safe location and await further advice.”

London issued a similar warning, adding “if you can leave Afghanistan safely by other means, you should do so immediately.”

Ramiz Raja to take over as PCB Chairman

Ramiz Raja to take over as PCB Chairman

LAHORE, AUG 26: Ramiz Raja is all set to be the new chairman of the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB). The decision follows a meeting with Prime Minister Imran Khan, who gave the go-ahead for the change of guard at the PCB. Raja will replace Ehsan Mani once the succession process is complete.

Both Ramiz and Mani met the Prime Minister on Monday (August 23) afternoon. After the meeting Ramiz, a former Pakistan captain, told Cricbuzz, 'I have given him (Imran Khan) my plans. He will make a call," and decided to wait to hear from the PM's office. Eventually, the decision was made three days later.

Ramiz confirmed that he has accepted the job. "The aim is to reset Pakistan cricket's GPS and will be in pursuit of excellence," Raja, who was also a Chief Executive Officer of PCB, told Cricbuzz on Thursday (August 26).

Meanwhile, Imran is understood to have asked Mani - whose three-year term ended on Wednesday - to ensure a smooth transition of power. Mani (76), an experienced hand in cricket administration, both at the PCB and the International Cricket Council (ICC), was seen as too old for the job, which necessitated high amounts of energy, particularly at the ICC forum, where the PCB is left with very few friends.

Also Mani's constant posturing against the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI), a powerful body at the ICC, did not leave him with too many friends in India. On the other hand, Ramiz has no shortage of friends in India, which is an advantage for Ramiz.

Ramiz's appointment will entail a bit of a process. His name first will be forwarded to the Board of Governors of the PCB, being one of the two nominees. Following this, there could be an election if another BoG member wants to contest, but normally, a PM's nominee is unlikely to meet any resistance. When nominated by Imran three years ago, Mani was elected unopposed. In the same way, Ramiz should find his way to the top position.

The second member to be nominated by the Prime Minister is believed to be a noted businessman - Asad Ali Khan. There are seven on the BOG currently - four independent directors, CEO (Wasim Khan) and two nominees of the Prime Minister.

WhatsApp to launch new messaging feature soon: report

ISLAMABAD, AUG 25: As per news reports, WhatsApp has started working on a new message feature that will allow users to send reactions to messages.

According to WABetainfo, the instant messaging platform’s move is an unexpected one, considering how WhatsApp has been working on introducing new features over the past few months but has not done the same for its messaging functions.

“You already know what is a reaction: it’s usually an emoji that you can place on a message to express emotions. Instagram, Twitter, iMessage already support message reactions and today we can start to discover the progress of their development,” read a post on WABetainfo.

WhatsApp, as per WABetainfo, is working on introducing a message to present when the user is using an outdated version of the app that does not support receiving reactions.

Pakistan to remain behind in smartphone usage, 5G coverage: GSMA

Pakistan to remain behind in smartphone usage, 5G coverage: GSMA

ISLAMABAD, AUG 25: The GSMA, which represents the interests of 750 mobile operators worldwide, has projected that Pakistan will be at the lowest end in terms of smartphone users as well the 5G coverage among the selected countries of Asia Pacific region by 2025.

However, Minister for Information Technology and Telecommunication Syed Amin Ul Haque said key initiatives have been taken which will help the country surpass the projections made by the GSMA.

The GSMA report titled “The Mobile Economy Asia Pacific 2021’ has highlighted the 5G status in the region.

The report highlighted that South Korea was the first country to roll out 5G in 2018, followed by Australia, Maldives and New Zealand in 2019.

KEY INITIATIVES WILL HELP SURPASS THE PROJECTIONS, SAYS IT MINISTER

The 5G rollout in 2020 was by Guam, Japan, Laos, Northern Mariana Islands, Philippines, Singapore and Thailand, whereas Indonesia, Vietnam and Malaysia achieved it in 2021.

In the second wave Brunei Darussalam, India and Cambodia are set for 5G roll-outs in 2022, whereas Pakistan, Bangladesh and Samoa are set to launch 5G in 2023.

The report added over 80 per cent of connections in Asia Pacific will be smartphones by 2025 up from 68pc in 2020.

But among the list of selected 12 key countries, Pakistan was close to the tail end, just above Bangladesh and it has been projected that these two countries will not reach the 80pc benchmark.

The report added that up to 74pc of Pakistanis will use smartphones in the next four years up from 51pc, while smartphone users in Bangladesh are likely to be 62pc against 41pc in 2020.

At the same time by the end of 2025, around 42pc of population in Pakistan will be broadband user compared to 27pc in 2020, whereas 10pc will be under telecom coverage.

The GSMA has said that Pakistan’s mobile market has significant potential, but current levels of mobile internet adoption, smartphone take-up and usage of digital services lag behind those of other countries in the region.

Certain policy decisions may have hindered Pakistan’s digital development and hampered growth of the online economy.

Responding to the query over low growth projections, the IT minister said the estimates in the GSMA report have been made on the basis of ground realities in 2020.

“However, the results will be different in coming 18 months mainly because of three factors which includes IT and telecom infrastructure development under the Universal Service Fund (USF) projects and the outcome of upcoming spectrum auction which will expand IT and telecom services to a large un-served population,” Mr Haq said.

GSMA has added that markets with higher tax uncertainty score lower on infrastructure provision while a fair and balanced approach between collecting revenues through taxes and fees has the potential to create favourable conditions for investment and improve affordability.

The minister added that the third factor was the local manufacturing of smartphones, which will ensure availability of cheap mobile sets, eventually increasing penetration significantly.

The GSMA too has acknowledged the efforts of Pakistan regarding spread of IT and telecom services across the country.

“This is reflected by decisions in 2021 to initiate mobile-sector tax reforms and introduce right-of-way policies for infrastructure deployments,” the report notes, adding that the GSMA will also collaborate with the USF to reduce the digital divide and usage gap.

The GSMA has lauded the USF, highlighting that it played an important role in expanding network coverage in remote areas of Pakistan including mountainous terrains and sparsely populated areas, by awarding contracts worth around Rs85 billion during the last decade.

The GSMA report has also projected that by 2023 the economic contribution of the mobile industry in Pakistan could reach $24 billion, accounting for 6.6pc of GDP.

The GSMA has said that these efforts will help strengthen Pakistan’s economy and contribute to the realisation of 9th Sustain Development Goal of build resilient infrastructure, promote sustainable industrialisation and foster innovation.

“Efficient and affordable ICT infrastructure and services allow citizens to participate in the digital economy, with significant impact in the areas of financial inclusion, poverty reduction and improved health,” the report said.

Cybercrime is On The Rise, Know How to Protect Your Personal Data on Social Media

Cybercrime is On The Rise, Know How to Protect Your Personal Data on Social Media

KARACHI, AUG 25: Personal data is something that must be protected so that it will not be misused by others that will harm us. However, when using social media, we inevitably provide our data such as date of birth, email, and phone number, as a condition for registering as a user. That’s why, in this digital era, keeping personal data is increasingly difficult.

Many cybercrimes that use personal data are irresponsibly done by certain individuals and vary from selling personal data of many users to kidnapping cases. Pakistan also needs a strong cybersecurity framework to counter identity theft, financial data theft, and surveillance of critical infrastructure. Usually, these individuals use digital technology to steal user data from digital technology-based companies as well as directly to personal accounts.

Hence, you have to be careful so that you don’t become the next victim of this harmful crime! To protect your personal data, Likee will share some tips that you can follow. Let’s take a look!

  1. Do not give your data to unknown people

You have to be careful with unknown numbers or emails. Especially, when you’re not doing anything with your social media that requires data verification. It could be that they are malevolent people who want to ask for your data so they can hack your account and use it to commit crimes. You should ensure the number and email address you receive are official from social media first.

You also have to be careful if you receive suspicious links on behalf of certain parties, who then ask for your personal data for the verification process. It’s a good idea to check first with the official contact of the party mentioned, before you provide the requested data. This will prevent you from becoming a victim of cybercrime.

  1. Save your passwords only for you

Passwords are created so that only you can access your social media accounts. Remember, in your social media accounts, a lot of personal data is stored. You may even have entered the debit or credit card number used for transactions. So, keeping your social media passwords confidential is a must.

  1. Create strong passwords and change them regularly

Keeping the password confidential is not enough. The irresponsible people out there have lots of ways to try to hack and find out passwords. For that, you should create a strong password, which usually consists of a combination of alphabet, numeric, and punctuation. Also, avoid using personal data such as date of birth. In addition, change your password periodically as much as possible so that it won’t be easily tracked or known by others.

  1. Activate the two-step verification feature

In general, social media provides a two-step verification feature to provide additional security. This feature helps us to avoid criminal acts that try to steal our accounts. When the two-step verification feature is active, you will be asked to enter a six-digit pin when logging in to an account on another device.

Japan’s ruling party to elect new leader next month

Japan’s ruling party to elect new leader next month

TOKYO, AUG 25: Political activity is heating up in Japan as the ruling Liberal Democratic Party (LDP) is set to elect its new leader next month, according to media reports.

Prime Minister Yoshihide Suga is currently also the president of the party whose term will end on Sept. 30. He will run for the second term.

The elections come at a time when Suga’s public rating is down largely due to the COVID-19 pandemic that has battered the country’s health and financial infrastructure of the world’s top third economy.

With a population of over 126 million, Japan has reported 1.34 million COVID-19 cases, including 15,693 deaths.

Besides, the general elections are also round the corner as the term of the Japanese parliament’s lower house ends on Oct. 21.

Toshihiro Nikai, who is number two in the LDP, met Suga on Wednesday.

Nikai assured his support to the premier for re-election, Tokyo-based Kyodo News reported. Besides, the LDP parliamentary affairs chief, Hiroshi Moriyama, has also backed Suga for re-election.

The campaigning for the election will begin on Sept. 17 while voting will be held on Sept. 29.

“As the coronavirus continues to spread, it is extremely important to secure hospital beds. We talked about the government and the party working together in efforts to secure beds,” Suga told journalists after his meeting with Nikai.

Suga succeeded former Prime Minister Shinzo Abe as the LDP chief after he stepped down last year due to health reasons.

Japan may go to general elections not beyond Nov. 28-40 days after the parliament’s term ends.

However, the premier can dissolve the lower house for a snap election which may not be possible until he earns back party leadership.

Suga may also like the parliament to run its full term and call elections within 40 days after Oct. 21.

No extensions for US evacuations in Afghanistan, warn Taliban

No extensions for US evacuations in Afghanistan, warn Taliban

KABUL, AUG 24: A Taliban spokesman says the US must complete its evacuation of people from Afghanistan by the August 31 date the Biden administration set for the withdrawal of all American troops.

Addressing a press conference, Taliban spokesman Zabihullah Mujahid said his group would accept no extensions to the deadline. He said life was returning to normal in the country but chaos at the airport remained a problem.

Many Afghans are desperate to flee the Taliban takeover of the country.

The spokesman said the United States should stop evacuating skilled Afghans, and warned Western forces against extending the Aug 31 deadline for airlifts out of the country.

The group said Americans were taking “Afghan experts” such as engineers out of the country.

“They have planes, they have the airport, they should get their citizens and contractors out of here,” said Mujahid.

The Taliban leader also said female Afghan government workers should stay home until security conditions in the country improved.

US-led troops have ramped up operations to get thousands of people out of Kabul, after the Taliban warned they would not allow the US to extend the deadline for a complete withdrawal.

President Biden has said he would stick to the schedule, but faced growing pressure to negotiate more time for the evacuations.

Germany said on Tuesday that Western allies simply could not fly every Afghan who needed protection out of Kabul before the cut-off date.

“Even if [the evacuation] goes on until August 31 or even a few days longer, it will not be enough to allow those who we, or the United States, want to fly out,” Foreign Minister Heiko Maas told Bild TV.

Earlier, France said it would have to end evacuations from Kabul’s airport on Thursday if the US stuck to the deadline, and Spain said it would not be able to rescue all Afghans who served Spanish missions.

Britain, meanwhile, has said it will lobby for an extension at a virtual G7 summit later on Tuesday.

‘Not aware’ of Taliban-CIA meeting

Mujahid during the news conference said he was not aware of any meeting between the Taliban and the CIA, but he did not deny that such a meeting took place.

Earlier in the day, the Washington Post reported that CIA chief William Burns held a secret meeting in Kabul with Taliban co-founder Mullah Abdul Ghani Baradar on Monday.

The meeting, which if confirmed will have been the highest-level encounter between the Taliban and the Biden administration since the group’s return to power, came as efforts to evacuate thousands of people from Taliban-controlled Afghanistan became increasingly urgent.

Burns is one of US President Joe Biden’s most experienced diplomats, while Baradar, who headed the Taliban’s political office in Qatar, is one of the top leaders in the regime that has taken power in Kabul.

A spokesperson for the CIA would not confirm the meeting to AFP, saying that the agency “never discusses the director’s travels”.

The Washington Post, which cited anonymous US sources for the meeting, did not describe the content of the discussions between the Taliban co-founder and the CIA boss.
