NCRC launches Prevention Against Child Abuse Campaign with Ahsan Khan as Goodwill Ambassador

  • The Campaign spreads awareness to curb child sexual abuse in Pakistan

ISLAMABAD – On The World Day for the Prevention of Child Abuse – marked today – The National Commission on the Rights of Child (NCRC), together with the European Union funded Huqooq e Pakistan Project, launched The Prevention of Child Abuse Campaign  helmed by actor Ahsan Khan as the Goodwill Ambassador in celebration of Universal Children’s Day.

The Prevention of Child Abuse Campaign 2021 comes at an important time because abuse and violence against children continue to be growing concerns in Pakistan – particularly compounded by the COVID-19 pandemic. Although other forms of abuse and violence exist, the Campaign aims to educate, equip, and empower children, parents, caregivers, and society about child sexual abuse.

Speaking at the launch, Chairperson NCRC, Afshan Tehseen, said, “Ensuring child rights is particularly important because Pakistan has a unique window of opportunity where the ‘youth bulge’ can truly drive Pakistan’s future. But the worrying child abuse crisis is unfolding right before our eyes. The time to act is now – through strengthening child rights protection systems and legislations along with mass civic awareness-raising efforts.” She reiterated that the NCRC is strongly committed to ensuring that child abuse cases are resolved swiftly and with the full force of justice.

The Head of Cooperation of the Delegation of European Union to Pakistan, Ovidiu Mic, speaking on the occasion of the launch, reiterated that “children are the future of our societies and their rights must be upheld, violations denounced and punished. In Pakistan, the European Union is actively supporting initiatives to prevent child abuse in all its forms and to promote awareness of the risks that it poses.” He then praised this initiative and highlighted its significance to raise awareness on the subject and create opportunities for discussion.

The guest-of-honour and Goodwill Ambassador, Ahsan Khan, spoke about his involvement with the Campaign: “We need to act now! Pakistan’s biggest resource is its young population, especially children. They will be tomorrow’s leaders, politicians, doctors, policy makers, actors and artists. For them to imagine a better world than ours, we need to ensure that we give them a better world to dream in where they can be safe, secure and loved.”

The Prevention of Child Abuse Campaign 2021 launched in the lead-up to Universal Children’s Day – celebrated on November 20. The day renews a global annual commitment to center children and young people’s voices to address their unique challenges and make decisions for their better future by fulfilling their due rights. Universal Children’s Day also marks the adoption of the United Nations Convention on the Rights of Child on 20 November 1989. Pakistan was the sixth country to ratify the Convention the following year.

Along with the Campaign, the NCRC is running several awareness-raising activities with children and a digital media campaign throughout the week.

In keeping with Pakistan’s commitment to the Convention, the NCRC established in February 2020 under The National Commission for the Rights of Child Act, 2017 – the Commission has an overarching advisory mandate for the promotion, protection, and fulfilment of child rights.

Pak vs Ban: ICC fines Shaheen Afridi for throwing ball at Bangladesh batsman

DHAKA, NOV 21: Pakistan fast bowler Shaheen Shah Afridi was fined and given a demerit point by the International Cricket Council (ICC) on Sunday for throwing a ball at Bangladesh batsman Afif Hossain during the second Twenty20 international match in Dhaka on Saturday.

The incident occurred in the third over of Bangladesh’s innings when Hossain played a delivery and the ball went straight to Afridi. The pacer collected the ball and threw it towards the stumps only for it to hit Afif, making him drop to the ground. The batsman was within the crease and not apparently intending to take a run when the bill hit him.

Afridi then immediately rushed to Hossain to inquire about him, who hadn’t received any serious injury.

“Shaheen Shah Afridi has been fined 15 per cent of his match fees for breaching Level 1 of the ICC Code of Conduct,” the ICC said in a statement.

Level 1 breaches carry a minimum penalty of an official reprimand, a maximum penalty of 50pc of a player’s match fee, and one or two demerit points.

The cricket governing body said Afridi was found to have breached Article 2.9 of the ICC Code of Conduct for Players and Player Support Personnel, which states: “throwing a ball (or any other item of cricket equipment such as a water bottle) at or near a Player, Player Support Personnel, Umpire, Match Referee or any other third person in an inappropriate and/or dangerous manner during an International Match.”

It added that “one demerit point has been added to the disciplinary record of Afridi, for whom it was the first offence in a 24-month period.”

Afridi admitted the offence and accepted the sanction proposed by an ICC referee, hence there was no need for a formal hearing, the statement added.

After the match, Afridi had also gone up to Hossain and the two players gently shook hands before moving on.

A day earlier, pacer Hasan Ali was reprimanded for violating Level 1 of the ICC Code of Conduct during Pakistan’s first Twenty20 against Bangladesh in Dhaka on Friday.

The incident had occurred in the 17th over of Bangladesh’s innings, when Ali made an inappropriate gesture towards batter Nurul Hasan after dismissing him, the ICC’s statement had said.

Ali was found to have breached Article 2.5 of the ICC Code of Conduct, which relates to “using language, actions or gestures that disparage or could provoke an aggressive reaction from a batter upon his/her dismissal during an international match”.

3 coal miners shot dead in Balochistan's Harnai area

Harnai, NOV 21: Three coal miners were shot dead by unidentified armed men in the Zalawan area in Harnai, Balochistan on Sunday, an official said.

Deputy Commissioner Harnai district Sohail Hashmi told Dawn.com that the assailants arrived at the coal mine in the wee hours of Sunday and opened fire on the colliers, leaving three of them dead on the spot.

He said the deceased belonged to Kandahar, Afghanistan.

The bodies were later taken to Rural Health Centre, Shahrag for medico-legal formalities.

104 coal miners killed this year

According to secretary-general of the Pakistan Central Mines and Labour Federation, Lala Sultan, at least 104 coal miners have lost their lives in the province this year, including the ones who died in a gas leak incident in September.

The Human Rights Commission of Pakistan (HRCP) had on Friday expressed concern over human rights violations and bad working conditions in Balochistan’s coal mines.

Addressing a press conference at the Quetta Press Club, veteran member of the rights body Husain Naqi had said the HRCP’s fact-finding mission was concerned to find that coal miners remained vulnerable to human rights violations.

The HRCP also highlighted that the compensation for death and injury is lower in Balochistan (i.e. Rs300,000) compared to other provinces (Rs500,000).

The rights body had also recommended that the government upgrade the status of the coal mining sector to industry and hold both mine owners and contractors accountable for running their sites in line with the provisions of the Mines Act of 1923 and subsequent amendments.

Leaders of Armenia and Azerbaijan agree to meet for Brussels summit

BAKU, NOV 20: After renewed heavy fighting on the border between Armenia and Azerbaijan in recent weeks, both sides appear to have accepted a proposal to meet for mediation talks at the highest level.

The Azerbaijani Foreign Ministry in Baku said on Saturday that President Ilham Aliyev was prepared to meet Armenian Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan on December 15 in Brussels. Armenia has also reportedly agreed to the meeting.

According to Brussels, the meeting, which will take place on the sidelines of the so-called EU Eastern Partnership summit, is being held at the initiative of EU Council President Charles Michel.

At the beginning of the week, the situation on the border between the two former Soviet republics escalated again, leaving over 10 people dead in total.

Armenia has also accused its neighbor of capturing around a dozen of its soldiers. The situation has subsequently eased, however.

Since last year’s war over the disputed region of Nagorno-Karabakh, in which Azerbaijan recaptured large parts of its erstwhile territory, there have been repeated skirmishes between the two sides, despite a ceasefire monitored by Russian peacekeeping troops being in force.

Fakhar leads Pakistan to series win over Bangladesh

DHAKA, NOV 20: Pakistan’s Fakhar Zaman struck an unbeaten half-century as his side made light work of beating Bangladesh by eight wickets in their second Twenty20 international in Dhaka on Saturday, taking an unassailable 2-0 series lead.

Fakhar hit 57 off 51 balls and put on 85 runs with Mohammad Rizwan (39) for the second wicket, guiding Pakistan to 109-2 in 18.1 overs.

Shaheen Afridi and Shadab Khan earlier claimed two wickets each to help the visitors restrict struggling Bangladesh to 108-7 after the home side opted to bat first.

Pakistan skipper Babar Azam fell for just one in the third over, dragging a Mustafizur Rahman delivery onto his stumps.

But Fakhar — who smashed two fours and three sixes but was dropped by Saif Hassan on 26 — and Rizwan denied Bangladesh further momentum with their calm approach.

Aminul finally dismissed Rizwan as Saif took the catch at extra cover, but it came too late as Fakhar soon sealed the contest and the series with a single through cover off part-timer Saif.

“The series win is a team effort,” said Babar. “The boys responded well as a unit and we carried forward the momentum” from the World Cup.

Bangladesh captain Mahmudullah Riyad rued their batting towards the end of their innings.

“I and Shanto (Najmul) were trying to get a partnership but we couldn’t capitalise in the end overs. For a team like us, we need a set batter to be there at the end but it didn’t happen today,” he said.

Pakistan dominated the match right from the start after dismissing both Bangladeshi openers in the first two overs.

Shaheen Afridi went for a golden duck to Saif, and Mohammad Naim fell to Mohammad Wasim for two edging to Fakhar at slip, as Bangladesh were reduced to 5-2.

Afif Hossain and Najmul Hossain offered some resistance, adding 46 runs for the third wicket before Shadab dismissed both to put Pakistan back in control.

For the hosts, Najmul Hossain top-scored with 40 off 34 balls while Afif Hossain chipped in with 20 runs from 21 balls.

Playing his first match of the series, Shaheen finished with 2-15 and Shadab grabbed 2-22 as Bangladesh struggled against Pakistan’s quality pace and spin bowling.

Pakistan won the first match of the series by four wickets on Friday.

The third and final match of the series will be held on the same ground on Monday.
