DUBAI, NOV 23: Dubai Cricket Council Chairman Abdul Rahman Falaknaz has offered to host Pakistan-India bilateral cricket series — almost a month after the arch-rivals played an ICC T20 World Cup match at the Dubai International Cricket Stadium.
The recently-concluded T20 World Cup, claimed by Australia, was staged across three venues — Sharjah, Dubai and Abu Dhabi — in the UAE while some matches of the preliminary round matches were played in Oman.
“The best thing would be to get India-Pakistan matches here. When Sharjah used to host India and Pakistan all those years ago, it was like a war. But it was a good war, it was a sporting war and it was fantastic,” Falaknaz was quoted.
Owing to political tensions, Pakistan and India haven’t played bilateral cricket series since 2013, when the Green Shirts visited India to play three T20s and two One Day Internationals. “I remember [Bollywood actor] Raj Kapoor came once with his family. During the awards night, he took the mic and said, ‘How wonderful it is to have these India-Pakistan battles in Sharjah. Cricket brings people together, cricket has brought us together and let us remain this way,’” recalled the DCC chief.
“So this is what we would like to do. If we can convince India to come and play here against Pakistan once a year or twice a year, it would be fantastic.”
‘India welcome to play IPL matches in Dubai’
The DCC chief also expressed willingness to host more Indian Premier League (IPL) matches in future.
“In 2014, when they shifted the IPL to the UAE due to elections, we gave them a warm reception. It all depends on the BCCI to decide what they want to do,” Falaknaz recalled.
“We are very friendly with them,” he said, adding that the BCCI had seen “our potential in 2014 and more this year. In 2014, they played 20 matches. Out of the 20 matches, 19 were fully sold”.
“So, I would invite BCCI to come and hold their IPL matches. Even if it is part of IPL to start here and finish in India or to start in India and finish in Dubai,” he suggested.

ISLAMABAD, NOV 22: Getz Pharma Pvt. Ltd.,in partnership withTabba Heart Institute, announced the launch of Pakistan Study of Premature Coronary Atherosclerosis in Young Adults (PAK- SEHAT)
Cardiovascular diseases continue to have a significant impact across the world among different populations. To address the issue of the rising health burden of ASCVD in Pakistan, Getz Pharma Pvt. Ltd and Tabba Heart Institute (THI) formally launched PAK-SEHAT- Pakistan Study of Premature Coronary Atherosclerosis in Young Adults, a nationwide study conducted through Pakistan's first state of art mobile lab. PAK SEHAT project is the largest, first-of-its-kind, longitudinal cohort study on Atherosclerotic Risk Assessment in Pakistani Population. This 10-year joint venture of Getz Pharma &THI (PAK SEHAT) will help determine risk factors for coronary heart disease so that early detection can be done and disease can be prevented rather than treated.
Cardiovascular disease (CVD) is one of the leading causes of mortality worldwide, causing approximately 32% of annual deaths. The risk of cholesterol-associated CVD varies among different ethnicities; however, the risk is four fold in the South Asian (SA) Population compared to other races. Furthermore, almost 75% of all CVD deaths are in low and middle-income countries (LMIC), where there are finite health resources and a multitude of health-seeking barriers.
The state of heart diseases in Pakistan also reflects a concerning picture. According to the World Health Organization data published in 2018, coronary heart disease deaths in Pakistan reached 20% of total deaths, and Pakistan ranks 18 in cardiac mortality in the global ranking. Moreover, the numbers of potential CVD risk factors, including hypertension and diabetes, are also alarming in Pakistan, with 50% hypertension and 17.1% diabetes in the adult population. There is a drastic shift in CVD occurrence in young ages in the SA population, as evidenced by the groundbreaking INTERHEART study suggesting 10.6% of SA participants presented with a heart attack at <40 years of age. Therefore, this study primarily envisions screening the Pakistani individuals at a younger age to prevent increasing CVD burden in the future.
This study aims to recruit healthy volunteers <40 years of age, from selected urban and rural areas of Pakistan, who are asymptomatic and have no cardiovascular disease. This would allow for assessing the participants' risk factor profiles and follow them up for at least five years to document the incidence of ASCVD. The objectives of PAK SEHAT includes:
1. To characterize the prevalence and severity of subclinical coronary atherosclerosis among young Pakistani men and women free of clinical CVD
2. To understand the impact, in terms of 5-year rates of cardiovascular events, by using the prognostic information provided by cardiac CTA and the other study tests and measurements to optimize cardiovascular prevention management in young Pakistanis.
While Pakistan is the second-most populous country in South Asia, most of the data on the prevalence of ASCVD from South Asian regions is derived from India. As a result, the Pakistani Population is highly underrepresented in global research, as there is currently no comprehensive database on the native Pakistani Population to assess the likelihood of developing ASCVD. Due to this high burden of disease, there is an urgent need for primary prevention and early screening for ASCVD in Pakistan.
The findings from a study of this scale can provide groundbreaking results. It would help in informing future health policy targeting the native Pakistani Population, and it would allow early interventions for patients with risk of ASCVD from a younger age. Getz Pharma and Tabba Heart Institute are proud to lead an initiative of this scale with the aim to contribute to the growing research database in Pakistan and promote early screening and prevention for cardiovascular diseases in the country.

- A spokesperson for the association said that all the petrol pumps across the country will remain closed on Thursday, November 25.
KARACHI, NOV 22: The Pakistan Petroleum Dealers Association (PPDA) has announced a countrywide strike on November 25 as they are "not interested in selling petrol on low profit margins", local media reported on Sunday.
A spokesperson for the
association said that all the petrol pumps across the country will remain
closed on Thursday, November 25.
“We have no way but to go on
strike as the government has failed to meet the November 17 deadline for
fulfilment of our demands,” the spokesperson said, adding that the petrol pumps
in Kashmir and Gilgit Baltistan will also remain shut on Thursday.
The PPDA spokesperson added that
the strike could extend for an "unspecified period" if the government
continued to give false consolation. This is the second strike call from the
association in less than three weeks. They had made a similar announcement for
November 5 but withdrew after a government team agreed to increase their
margins on the sale of petroleum products by 6 percent within a few days.
The meeting also agreed to
constitute a committee under petroleum secretary Dr Arshad Mahmood to ensure
implementation of the agreement through approvals from the Economic
Coordination Committee (ECC) and the federal cabinet over the next 10 days.
However, things remain in
stalemate two weeks after the agreement.”The petrol dealers have been in a
financial ‘tatters’ on the high cost of business and low margin of returns,”
PPDA Chairman Abdul Sami Khan had told a joint news conference held at Karachi
Press Club’s auditorium on November 3. He said that the government guarantees
only two per cent of margin on sales of fuel oil in the face of rising
electricity tariffs.
“We demand the government to
cancel our petrol pumps licences,” he said, adding that “nearly 50 per cent of
the petrol pumps will close down permanently with licence cancellation as no
one will reapply for acquisition”.
“Immediate increase on ex-depot
price in dealers’ margin for HSD and MS without burdening common people and
without increasing prices of petroleum products, absorbing dealers’ margin
increase by reducing Sales Tax and PDL,” he demanded.
