LAHORE, Jan 2: Punjab Health Minister Yasmin Rashid Sunday announced 25,000 jobs besides also detailing the use of Sehat cards that would be provided to the entire population in the province until March 2022.

Addressing a presser, Yasmin Rashid said that people not having NIC would not be able to avail health facilities from Sehat card while B-form of their children will also be necessary to ensure health facilities for the entire family.

“We have also developed an application named Naya Pakistan National Sehat Card from where details regarding the health facilities could be accessed easily,” she said adding that 133 hospitals have been added to the list of health facilities alone from Lahore.

She said that the website of the health card also carries information regarding process to acquire a health card.

“The health card will be provided to the head of the family and he will be bound to register his entire family to acquire health facilities for them,” she said and added that every district would have a special desk for Sehat card.

She further announced that the health department would announce 25,000 new jobs in 2022 and more doctors would be hired by the private hospitals after 101 health facilities have registered themselves with the health department.

She further asked the citizens to vaccinate themselves against COVID-19 saying that 51 percent of the Punjab population have been double-jabbed while 71 percent received their first dose.

She lamented that the citizens have been avoiding face masks recently after a decline in COVID cases and warned that the Omicron variant is surging globally and it is easily transmissible than other variants.

ISLAMABAD, JAN 1: PPP Chairperson Bilawal Bhutto-Zardari and PML-N President Shehbaz Sharif blasted Prime Minister Imran Khan on Saturday for the overnight price increase in petroleum products.

The government increased the prices of petrol and high speed diesel (HSD) by Rs4 per litre, according to a statement issued by the Finance Division late on Friday. The Rs4 increase in the price of petrol is part of a commitment made by the government under an agreement with the International Monetary Fund for a net fiscal adjustment of almost Rs550 billion during the remaining part of the current fiscal year.

Following this development, the price of petrol was increased from Rs140.82 to Rs144.82, that of HSD from Rs137.62 to Rs141.62, of kerosene from Rs109.53 to Rs113.53 and that of light diesel oil from Rs107.06 to Rs111.06, according to the Finance Division’s statement.

Bilawal sarcastically referred to the increase as a “New Year’s gift” from the prime minister for the people.

He said the premier had claimed that 2021 would be a year of prosperity but “2022 has now arrived [so] where did that claim of prosperity go?”

Every year in “Naya Pakistan” proved to be more expensive than the last and then the government claimed the previous governments were incompetent, the PPP chairman said.

“During the PPP’s last government, there was the worst global economic crisis but we did not allow the people to bear the burden of inflation.”

“The federal government should immediately reduce the prices of petroleum products in line with world market prices,” Bilawal demanded.

He said the only solution to getting rid of inflation was ending Prime Minister Imran Khan’s government.

Shehbaz expressed similar sentiments, saying it would have been better for the premier to resign than “drop a petrol bomb on the new year”.

“Governments in the world cheapen prices on festive occasions [but] Imran Niazi dropped an inflationary bomb,” he railed against the price increase.

Shehbaz said the government could not tolerate the people’s joy on New Year’s eve. “Another name for the present government is oppression, exploitation and indifference,” he added.

Like Bilawal, Shehbaz called on the prime minister to resign instead of “burying the people alive”. “Do not punish the nation for your foolishness,” he hit out against the premier.

“The tyrannical government must be gotten rid of in the new year to save the nation from inflation, economic catastrophe and unemployment.”

“We pray to God that the new year becomes the beginning of the nation’s escape from the torments of inflation, mismanagement, economic ruin, hunger, disease, oppression and injustice,” the PML-N president hoped.

The criticism by the opposition comes amid Information Minister Fawad Chaudhry marking the beginning of the new year by extending a proverbial hand of friendship to the opposition and acknowledging the need to “reduce bitterness” in the country’s politics.

The information minister, in a bid to smooth relations with political rivals, tweeted today: “At the beginning of the new year 2022, I think we need to reduce bitterness. The government and the opposition should talk on elections, economy, political and judicial reforms. “Pakistan is a great country. We need to understand our responsibilities. It diminishes the prestige of politicians. Ruckus in the parliament lowers the repute of politicians in the eyes of the common man.”

BAKU, JAN 1: The first baby of 2022 in Azerbaijan was born in Ganja, Report informs citing the Information and Statistics Department of the Health Ministry that the baby is one of the twin boys born in the Ganja perinatal center.

The mother of the twins is from the village of Garagaji, Barda District.

The babies weigh 1 kg 900 grams and 1 kg 600 grams.

Brussels, DEC 31: A total of 45 journalists were killed worldwide in 2021, the International Federation of Journalists (IFJ) said on Friday — “one of the lowest death tolls” it has recorded for any year.

The figure tracked closely with a toll of 46 killings of journalists given two weeks ago by another media watchdog, Reporters Without Borders (known by its initials RSF), which also noted it as its lowest-ever since starting its tallies in 1995.

“While this decrease is welcome news, it is small comfort in the face of continued violence,” the Brussels-based IFJ said in statement.

The toll included nine in Afghanistan, the highest number suffered by a single country.

Elsewhere, eight died in Mexico, four in India and three in Pakistan.

The IFJ said the media workers “more often than not are killed for exposing corruption, crime and abuse of power in their communities, cities and countries”.

According to the group’s count, the Asia-Pacific region — which includes Afghanistan — was the deadliest, with 20 killings. Then came the Americas, with 10, Africa, with eight, Europe with six, and the Middle East and Arab countries with just one. It also mentioned the death of two journalists in a “deadly accident” in Iran.

While “the risks associated with armed conflict have reduced in recent years” because fewer journalists were able to report on the ground, “the threats of crime gang and drug cartels’ rule from the slums in Mexico to the streets of European cities in Greece and the Netherlands continue to increase”, it added.

IFJ Secretary General Anthony Bellanger emphasised his organisation’s support for a UN convention for the protection of journalists to “ensure accountability for journalists’ killings”.

The IFJ’s figures differed slightly from those given by RSF, which counted seven journalists killed in Mexico, six in Afghanistan, and four each in Yemen and India.

The round drew participation from 47 Ventures, Habib Bank Limited, Dilsons Private Limited and angel investors from Silicon Valley.
