RAWALPINDI, JUL 30: A delegation of Afghan journalists on Friday called on Chief of Army Staff Gen Qamar Javed Bajwa at the General Headquarters (GHQ) for a “candid interaction”, the Inter-Services Public Relations said in a statement.

Speaking to the delegation, the army chief emphasised that media could act as a bridge to create a conducive environment for promoting cultural, social and people-to-people engagement between the two countries.

“It is the responsibility of media and people to identify and defeat the spoilers of peace,” he was quoting as saying.

Gen Bajwa stressed that peace in Afghanistan was Pakistan’s earnest desire, saying the two countries’ peace was interlinked. “The spoilers will not be allowed to derail the peace process,” he added.

Referring to Pakistan’s border management regime, the army chief said the security of borders was in the best interest of Pakistan and Afghanistan.

He also highlighted the importance of restoration of peace in Afghanistan for sustainable regional development.

Appreciating the Pak-Afghan Youth Forum for arranging the visit of journalists, Gen Bajwa said he hoped for more frequent exchange of such visits in the future.

He termed the youth of Pakistan and Afghanistan the hope for future peace and progress in the region.

The delegation thanked the army chief for the “candid interaction” and appreciated Pakistan’s sincerity and efforts for people in Afghanistan including hosting refugees and playing a “facilitative role” in the Afghan peace process, according to the ISPR.

ISLAMABAD, JUL 29: Prime Minister Imran Khan has said that Pakistan cannot be held "responsible" for the actions of the Taliban in the aftermath of US and its allies' ongoing withdrawal from Afghanistan, adding that his government is not a spokesperson for the militant group.

"What the Taliban are doing or aren't doing has nothing to do with us. We are not responsible, neither are we spokespersons for the Taliban," he said in comments to Afghan media representatives that were aired on Thursday.

The premier's remarks were a continuation of Pakistan's repeated warnings that it would not accept the responsibility if it was blamed for any deterioration in the Afghan peace process.

In June, National Security Adviser Dr Moeed Yusuf had said the sudden withdrawal of the United States from Afghanistan was not ideal, adding that any shifting of blame on Pakistan for “facesaving” would be unacceptable.

Earlier this month, the premier gave a robust response to Afghan President Ashraf Ghani’s allegation about Pakistan’s “negative role” in the Afghan peace process and said it was “extremely unfair” to blame Islamabad for the situation in Afghanistan.

PM Imran today again distanced Islamabad from the happenings in Kabul, saying: "All we want is peace in Afghanistan."

He said that the Afghans had a choice to make: to either pursue the US-backed military solution or to pursue a political settlement where there is an inclusive government. "[The latter] is the only solution," he said.

"There are three million Afghan refugees in Pakistan, almost all of them are Pashtuns and most will have sympathies with the Taliban. How is Pakistan supposed to check who is going over there to fight when we have about 30,000 people crossing into Afghanistan every day. How is Pakistan going to check that?"

"We have three million refugees in Pakistan [...] how can Pakistan be held responsible? There are refugee camps with 100,000 and 500,000 people."

He said it was not possible for Pakistan to sift through the refugee camps to find out who was pro-Taliban and who was not, adding that until recently there was no physical border between the two countries.

"The Durand Line was imaginary," he said, referring to the 2640-kilometre-long border between Afghanistan and Pakistan. He said that Pakistan has completed 90 per cent of the border fencing.

"We are trying our best, but it is not possible to hold Pakistan responsible when you have over three million refugees here."

'Civil war in Afghanistan not in Pakistan's interest'

He said that it was not in Pakistan's interest to have civil war break out in Afghanistan. "What interest could Pakistan have in backing someone to take over Afghanistan?"

What is clear is that no one party will be able to take over Afghanistan, he said.

PM Imran said that in the 90s Pakistan had pursued the policy of 'strategic depth' as it was wary of Indian influence in Afghanistan.

"In those days we did try to have favourites. Now, and especially in my government, we believe that Afghanistan can never be controlled from the outside."

So Pakistan will have good relations with whoever the Afghans choose, he said. "We have no favourites now."

'Discrepancy in what Afghan envoy's daughter says and what evidence shows'

Commenting on the recent incident involving the Afghan ambassador's daughter in Islamabad, the premier said that authorities had charted out the exact path taken by Silsila Alikhil. He said that taxi drivers were traced and interrogated.

"Unfortunately, what the ambassador's daughter is saying and what the cameras show do not add up. She says she was put in a taxi, taken away and beaten up. But there is a picture of that taxi and she is sitting there and she is fine."

He said that the police had pulled all the records and there was a "discrepancy". He said that since the ambassador's daughter had gone back to Afghanistan there was no way to confirm what had happened.

He said that the probe team from Afghanistan would be handed over all the information so that they could question the daughter when they go back.

'American should have spoken to Taliban from position of strength'

PM Imran said that Pakistan had nothing to do with why 150,000 Nato troops did not succeed in Afghanistan. "It's exactly like what the Americans did in Vietnam. When they failed in Vietnam, they blamed insurgents from Cambodia or Laos."

He said that Pakistan was told at one point that the Taliban's main sanctuaries were in North Waziristan. "The kept pushing us to take action. Finally after four or five years, we took action [but] one million people were internally displaced [...] what difference did it make?"

He said that the Americans should have spoken to the Taliban from a position of strength. "When there were 150,000 Nato troops, that was the time to talk to [the Taliban]. How can they expect the Taliban to compromise when an exit date has been given and a few thousand troops are left?"

The premier also questioned what the US would achieve operating from Pakistan when it could not achieve its goal in Afghanistan for the last 20 years.

"If someone can convince me that it would make a big difference and there would be peace in Afghanistan [...] maybe we would consider it. But what they haven't achieved in 20 years, how do they expect to achieve that by having bases in Pakistan?"

It will involve Pakistan in a conflict which it has nothing to do with, he said, adding that Pakistan had already suffered great human and economic losses due to the 'war on terror'.

'Pakistan's future economic strategies depend on Afghanistan'

Responding to a question, the premier said that he has always believed that there is no military solution to the situation in Afghanistan.

He stated that Pakistan was the country that wanted peace in Afghanistan the most as it would connect the country to Central Asia. "All our future economic strategies depend on peace in Afghanistan," he said, adding that Pakistan had signed an agreement with Uzbekistan for a railway project through Afghanistan.

Concluding his media talk, the prime minister said that he saw relations between the countries getting stronger with every passing year. "That's because we need each other," he said, adding that it was a mutually beneficial relationship.

ISLAMABAD, JUL 29: An Online International Conference on “Culture: Exploring New Frontier of Sino-Pakistan Friendship” was organized by the Pakistan Research Center for a Community with Shared Future, Communication University of China, Beijing.

The Online International Conference was addressed by renowned subject experts from Pakistan and China.

Prof. Dr. Zahid Anwar, Director, China Study Center, and Dean Faculty of Social Sciences, University of Peshawardiscussed “Importance of Cultural Communication Centers in enhancing Sino-Pakistan Bilateral Ties”.

Dr. Zahid mentioned that Culture is a particular set of customs through which we experience all aspects of life, speak, and express ourselves, how we live and understand people. He also added that through our culture we develop a sense of belonging, personal and cognitive growth, and the ability to empathize and relate to each other.

Talking about language, he stated that Communication is a fundamental component of any society, and language is an important aspect of that. According to Dr. Zahid, For Pakistan, China has become more important than ever before. Since the China Pakistan Economic Corridor (CPEC) project has started. It has been observed that the trend of learning Chinese language in Pakistan has been increasing. Especially at the government level, the institutions have been set up in collaboration with China to learn Mandarin.

In the aftermath of CPEC, many people of Pakistan will have employment opportunities and to en-hail those opportunities Chinese language skill will help a lot.

Prof. Dr. SumeraJawad, Professor & Principal, College of Arts & Design (CAD), University of the Punjab, Lahore discussed “Art as a tool for cross-Cultural Interaction: A Case Study of Pakistan and China Friendship”.

According to Dr. Sumera, CPEC can be seen as the revival of the old Silk Route, which had connected civilizations and cultures and introduced Buddhism, Christianity and Islam to China. Furthermore, she mentioned that cultural exchange between Pakistani and Chinese citizens increased after the launch of CPEC. This has led to increased cooperation and understanding between the governments extended and acceptance among the people. Also, this has resulted in strengthened people-to-people relations between the two sides.

According to Dr. Sumera, Chinese Art & Calligraphy is a form of calligraphy widely practiced in China and revered int he Chinese ultural sphere, which often includes Japan, Taiwan, Korea and Vietnam. Additionally, The calligraphic tradition of East Asia originated and developed from China. There is a general standardization of the various styles of calligraphy in this tradition. Chinese calligraphy and ink and wash painting are closely related to our pakistni art, since they are accomplished using similar tools and techniques.

Dr. Sumera also mentioned that China and Pakistan have not only remained connected through geographic boundaries, but by the way in which our cultures have historically relied on each other for ideas and aesthetics.

Mr. IsrarHussainChishti, Associate Professor, College of Arts & Design (CAD), University of the Punjab, Lahore discussed “Music as key Component in Cross-Cultural Connectivity”.

Mr. IsrarChishti stated that music is a key component. Music is not just a philosophy or an idea. In ideas individuals can differ or oppose each other.  According to him, Music is like a crop which comes from soil. According to Mr. Israr, while travelling, different scale of accent can be observed. Similarly, music opens a landscape of an area.

Additionally, he mentioned that music can be a key for cross-culture interaction and closure between countries. World is coming close day by day just because of music. He also showed some videos to familiarize the audience with different scales of music and how music is a key for cross culture.

Dr. WanchuZhong, Research Fellow, Institute for Community with Shared Future (ICSF), Communication University of China (CUC), Beijingdiscussed “CPEC: Key to Sino-Pakistan Cultural Relations”. She mentioned that China celebrates different festivals of Pakistan which facilitates in enhancing bilateral relations Pakistan and china and also supports in strengthening people to people contact.

Furthermore, she mentioned that Cultural relations between Pakistan and China are broadening. As the relationship between both countries are based on mutual trust, cooperation and harmony. China and Pakistan do not have common language and culture yet they support each other in promoting culture and language; it is the main reason behind expanding of the relations between these two.

Ms. MaryamRaza, Deputy Director, Pakistan Research Center for a Community with Shared Future discussed “Pakistan-China Literary Corridor: Familiarizing Pakistanis with Chinese Culture”. She mentioned that culture is a valuable tool for advancing on the road to integration. It can make a decisive contribution to strengthening cohesion, dialogue, and social understanding among the countries, which is an important factor to counter common global threats. In this aspect, academic/intellectual facilitation is needed among countries to promote peace, dialogue, and accept cultural and civilizational diversities.

According to her, incorporating the phenomena of regionalism into academic cooperation would promote cultural integration and close linkages between Pakistan and China. Since last decades, a productive growth in research and educational collaboration between both countries has been witnessed.  Each year, a large number of students go to China to pursue higher education and also a significant number of Chinese students visit Pakistan under student or cultural exchange programs. In this aspect, they can play a significant role after returning to Pakistan strengthen the existing cordial relations between the two nations. It can be an asset for both countries that is crucial forcultural assimilations.

The Online Conference was moderated by Ms. PalwashaNawaz, Deputy Director, Pakistan Research Center for a Community with Shared Future. The online conference was attended by 50 participants and subject experts from both Pakistan and China. The conference was also live streamed on various social media platforms.

Parents tend to underestimate the behavioral influence that they have on their children, however in developing countries the ratio exceeds. It can be understood that, no one can be the perfect parent, but there are certain parenting behaviors that can have serious and lifelong negative effects on children.

In 2011, the UK’s Department for Education found that children who are exposed to bad parenting are two times more likely to misbehave. Inconsistent disciplinary approaches, poor supervision and physical punishment are poor parenting attributes that can negatively affect children, regardless of their ethnicity and socioeconomic status.

You must have some colleague in your workplace harsh and unfriendly, this is in actual their inability to have long lasting friendships and relations.This mostly happens when a person during his childhood was not reprimanded or punished for the mistakes he made. The child therefore grows up knowing that he is in control and is ever right. He becomes a spoilt child who believes that he must always have their way in everything. This has negative effects on the relationships that the child gets into. Co-existing with others becomes difficult and such a child is more likely to make more enemies than friends.“A villain is just a victim whose story hasn't been told.”

The other quit common example is people preferring solitude, and the anti-social behavior, which is considered as psychological disorder, that also finds its roots to the early days. This happens especially of the child grows up in a family where there is a lot of abuse whether physical or emotional. This also occurs when a child suffers from neglect as a child. Such children may have difficulty in making friend and trusting people as they find it easier to push people away than to open up.

Depression, that you would found as an everyday problem and the poor souls having low self-esteem. Maybe one of your best friends to who needs your backing in his or her every decision, basically there was some disruption that still shows its signs. A child who is never allowed to make decisions, and who is constantly criticized, belittled and who goes through abuse is likely to have low self-esteem. Moreover, it becomes worse when the child goes through sexual abuse as a child. Such forms of abuse are also known to make children more prone to violent behaviors. Children who are exposed to abuse and violence are likely to become violent people. They grow up believing that violence is the only way to solve issues.

More to add, neglected children and those who are exposed to abuse are more likely to be prosecuted for juvenile delinquency. Other common effects of bad parenting include drug addiction, infamy, failure to thrive and poor growth and development both physically and mentally. These poor souls are the easy targets for wolves hovering around. If you are not a good gardener, then better not to flower.

"The two foreign ministers will exchange views on the entire gamut of Pak-Saudi ties, and regional and international issues," the FO tweeted, adding that the Saudi official will also call on other dignitaries during his visit.

According to Radio Pakistan, Prince Faisal will be accompanied by a delegation comprising senior officials of the Saudi government.

The state broadcaster quoted FO spokesperson Zahid Hafeez Chaudhri as saying that Pakistan and Saudi Arabia have "long-standing and historic fraternal relations, rooted deep in common faith, shared history and mutual support."

"The relationship is marked by close cooperation in all fields and mutual collaboration on regional and international issues," he added.

Chaudhri also highlighted that Saudi Arabia, as a member of the Organisation of Islamic Cooperation's Contact Group on Kashmir, had "steadfastly supported the Kashmir cause".

He described the " frequent high-level visits" by Saudi officials as "a key feature of the relationship that serves to further deepen and broaden the relationship [between Pakistan and Saudi Arabia] in myriad dimensions".

LAHORE, JUL 22: The University of Engineering and Technology (UET) has appointed first female engineering professor in 100 years.

Dr Saima Yasin has joined the Chemical Engineering Department, becoming the first professor of engineering at the oldest and largest seat of higher learning in engineering and technology since its establishment, initially as the Mughalpura Technical College in 1921.

This also makes her the first female professor of engineering in Punjab. Being the only professor in her department of 23 teachers, the university Syndicate has also appointed her as chairperson of the department, which also makes her the first female chairperson of any engineering department at the UET and the province.
