Eurowings has taken off from the new Berlin Brandenburg Airport for the first time. The inaugural departure left for Cologne, closely followed by flight EW8000 to Stuttgart.
The news makes Eurowings the first airline in the Lufthansa Group to operate scheduled flights from the new capital city airport.
In domestic traffic, Eurowings currently connects the destinations Cologne, Düsseldorf and Stuttgart with the capital at least three times a day – on many days even more frequently.
Despite a reduced flight schedule as a result of Covid-19, the airline is focusing on the off-peak hours, which are popular with travellers.
The domestic German program is supplemented by weekly flights to the Canary Islands and the Greek Islands.
Eurowings plans to gradually expand the Berlin Brandenburg program in line with market conditions from spring 2021 onwards.
“In terms of culture and history, there is hardly a more exciting European city than Berlin.
“The new Berlin Brandenburg will further increase Berlin’s attractiveness, becoming the entrance and exit gate to a cool, modern metropolis.
“And no other airline in Germany flies more tourists to Berlin than Eurowings.
“That’s why we will be expanding here in the future,” said Jens Bischof, Eurowings chief executive.
Aircraft from Eurowings will be positioned at the Pier North of the new capital city airport.
Passengers will benefit from short distances, boarding without bus transfers and a direct building connection to the Lufthansa Lounge.

Tourism in Saudi Arabia has a bright future, despite the impact of the Covid-19 pandemic, delegates at the new Future Hospitality Summit have been told.
Saudi minister of tourism, Ahmed Al Khateeb, opened the digital conference this morning on an upbeat note.
He told delegates: “We are seeing a clear picture emerge of how the next few months, even years, will look in the tourism sector.
“The agenda will be set by events such as this.”
Tourism authorities in Saudi Arabia hope to move up the global visitor list in the coming years, taking a place in the top five by 2030.
The sector has traditionally been driven by religious tourism, particularly the Hajj to Mecca, but there are now hopes a leisure sector can be added to drive numbers upward.
As part of the new focus, Saudi Arabia has issued more than half a million tourism visas since the launch of a new scheme in 2019 – though numbers will have slowed with borders closed during the Covid-19 pandemic.
“When we opened our borders last year, people were exiting to discover and explore our heritage, the treasures we have in Saudi Arabia,” added Al Khateeb.
“We are also developing the Red Sea coastline to share it with travellers from around the world - wonderful beaches and reefs.
“There are also more than 10,000 historical sites in Saudi Arabia, including five recognised by UNESCO, taking us back thousands of years.
“These are there for people to come visit, to learn from.”
Future Hospitality Summit is a hybrid virtual conference developed to explore big ideas and tackle the challenges facing the hospitality industry, and will take place in Riyadh over the next two days.
The event, which promises to be one of the most impactful gatherings of the hospitality community, will be delivered on a cutting-edge event platform from Bench Digital.
It will provide an immersive live experience, including a virtual exhibition, one-to-one video networking and integrated chat features to all participants.
United Nations World Tourism Organisation (UNWTO) secretary general, Zurab Pololikashvili, joined the event to reiterate plans to open its first ever regional office in Riyadh.
Al Khateeb added: “We are honoured that Saudi Arabia has been approved as the location for the first ever UNWTO regional office.
“This collaborative approach will help drive growth and build resilience across the tourism sector at national and regional levels.”
The regional office for the Middle East will opened between this and next year.

“Passengers can also rely on our airline operate an honest schedule of flights with our mixed fleet giving us the ability to maintain services, and upgrade or downgrade aircraft size depending on passenger demand.”
Qatar Airways has taken delivery of three more Airbus A350-1000 aircraft.
The development reaffirms its position as the largest operator of Airbus A350 aircraft in the world, with 52 in its fleet.
The new planes will operate on strategic long-haul routes to Africa, the Americas, Asia-Pacific and Europe.
Qatar Airways Group chief executive, Akbar Al Baker, said: “As one of the only airlines to continue taking delivery of new aircraft at this time, our strategic investment in modern, fuel-efficient twin-engine aircraft has enabled us to continue flying.
“Environmentally conscious passengers can travel with the reassurance that Qatar Airways continuously monitors the market to assess both passenger and cargo demand to ensure it operates the most efficient aircraft on each route.
“Rather than being forced to fly oversized aircraft due to limited aircraft options, reducing the flexibility for passengers to travel when they want, Qatar Airways has a variety of sustainable aircraft it can choose from to offer more flights with the right capacity in each market.
“Passengers can also rely on our airline operate an honest schedule of flights with our mixed fleet giving us the ability to maintain services, and upgrade or downgrade aircraft size depending on passenger demand.”
Al Baker added, due to the impact of Covid-19 on travel demand, Qatar Airways would continue to keep its Airbus A380 fleet grounded, arguing it is not “commercially or environmentally justifiable” to operate such a large aircraft.
