UK to ban entry from Pakistan, three other countries from April 9

UK to ban entry from Pakistan, three other countries from April 9

ISLAMABAD, APR 3: Britain said on Friday it would add Bangladesh, Kenya, Pakistan and the Philippines to its travel “red list”, banning entry to people arriving from those countries unless they are British or Irish nationals.

British High Commissioner Christian Turner made the announcement on Twitter.

Those who come to Britain from countries on the red list will be refused entry, while returning Britons must submit to 10 days of mandatory quarantine in hotels.

In his message, Turner said that direct flights between Pakistan and the UK would continue to operate but schedules could change.

During their quarantine, people from red list countries will have to get tested for the coronavirus twice. However, a negative test result does not mean they will be allowed to shorten the time they stay under quarantine, according to the BBC.

From 4am on April 9, Pakistan, Kenya, the Philippines and Bangladesh will be put on the list, the government said, joining about three dozen other nations mainly in Africa, the Middle East and South America.

Other countries included on the list are Angola, Argentina, Bolivia, Botswana, Brazil, Burundi, Cape Verde, Chile, Colombia, Democratic Republic of the Congo, Ecuador, Eswatini, Ethiopia, French Guiana, Guyana, Lesotho, Malawi, Mozambique, Namibia, Oman, Panama, Paraguay, Peru, Qatar, Rwanda, Seychelles, Somalia, South Africa, Suriname, Tanzania, UAE, Uruguay, Venezuela, Zambia and Zimbabwe.

There have been calls for the inclusion of some European countries where Covid-19 cases have surged, but the government has said it currently has no plans to do so.

The UK has also banned its own citizens from travelling abroad for leisure.

Virus situation in Pakistan

The third wave of the coronavirus in Pakistan has been intensifying over the last few weeks with daily cases reaching levels last seen in June and July of 2020.

During the last 24 hours, the country reported 5,234 cases. This is the highest number of cases reported so far this year, and the highest since June 20, 2020, when 5,948 cases were recorded.

The total number of cases in the country is 678,165. Deaths have risen to 14,613 after 83 fatalities were reported during the last 24 hours.

Government officials have blamed the UK variant of Covid-19 for the third wave, with Minister for Planning and Development Asad Umar saying there was "no doubt" that the third wave had started in the country and the spread of the UK variant was the reason behind it.

"The phenomenon that is driving [the third wave] is the spread of the UK strain," he said at the time.

Umar had said that when the government looked at districts where a higher number of cases were reported, it found that these were areas where a large population of Pakistanis residing in Britain lived.

Similar statements were made by the health ministers of Punjab and Sindh as well.

airBaltic to accept range of new cryptocurrencies

RIGA, MAR 30: airBaltic has begun to accept cryptocurrencies – including Bitcoin Cash, Ether and Dogecoin, among others - for bookings made on its website.

The Latvian carrier was the first airline to accept Bitcoin payments for its flight tickets, in 2014.

The new service will be offered in cooperation with provider BitPay.

Martin Gauss, chief executive of airBaltic, said: “As an innovative airline, we always strive to search for ways to improve the customer experience starting from the booking process.

“Over the years around 1,000 clients have used the payment option, which may not seem like a lot, but still offers passengers a unique payment option hard to find elsewhere.”

The ticket prices on the website are displayed in euros.

When airBaltic customers pay for their flight, their crypto currencies are converted into euros automatically at the current exchange rate by the payment system operator BitPay.

Availability of payments in other cryptocurrencies are subject to the cryptocurrency wallet the customer uses.

Qantas airlines offering 'mystery flights' to surprise destinations in Australia

Qantas airlines offering 'mystery flights' to surprise destinations in Australia

  • Mystery flights will depart from Sydney, Brisbane and Melbourne

CANBERRA, MAR 4: Flight to nowhere? Check. Flight to somewhere? Check. Flight to who knows where? That’s next.

Qantas has announced the latest in its series of highly popular concept flights to combat the border blues, with plans to operate three domestic mystery flights for travellers keen to enjoy unique travel experiences in Australia while international borders remain closed.

The national carrier last operated mystery flights in the 1990s when travellers would turn up at the airport and be allocated seats on a scheduled flight to any of the airline’s destinations where they spent a day at their leisure before flying home.

Qantas has evolved the concept and will offer three dedicated Boeing 737 mystery flight experiences that will include not just the flight, but an entire day of activities in a mystery destination – so all passengers need to do is book and turn up at the airport.

All destinations are outside major capital cities.

Qantas Group chief customer officer, Stephanie Tully, said the mystery flights were about giving Australians memorable travel experiences and promoting domestic tourism.

“Our customers tell us that where they can and can’t travel within Australia has been a bit of a mystery lately.

“The vaccine rollout is bringing a lot more certainty and domestic border restrictions should soon be a thing of the past.

“In the meantime, these flights turn that mystery into a positive by creating a unique experience for the many people keen to start travelling again.

“As well as helping bring more of our people back to work, these mystery flights are another way to support tourism operators in regional areas especially, who have been hit particularly hard by several waves of travel restrictions,” Tully added.

Qantas’ Mystery Flight Experiences follow its Flight to Nowhere (when domestic border closures were at their peak) and Flight to Somewhere (when initial reopening began last year), which proved extremely popular.

The limited mystery flight experiences will depart from Sydney, Brisbane and Melbourne to a destination within approximately two hours.

As part of creating a unique on-board experience the flights will include some low-level scenic flybys of key landmarks en route (subject to weather conditions and air traffic control).

Experiences on the ground could include anything from a winemaking course in a premier Australian wine region to a gourmet lunch with musical entertainment on the shores of one of Australia’s tropical island wonders.

Customers will be provided with clues to ensure it is an appropriate outing for their areas of interest and to assist with whether to pack a snorkel or sneakers in their carry-on baggage.

Seats on the Qantas Mystery Flight Experiences go on sale tomorrow for travel in March, April and May.

NORWAY SPECIAL REPORT: Norwegian govt working on new travel guidelines for winter holidays

NORWAY SPECIAL REPORT: Norwegian govt working on new travel guidelines for winter holidays

OSLO, FEB 4: Minister of Health Bent Høie (H) confirms that the government is working to provide updated travel advice ahead of the winter holidays in week 8 and week 9.

“We would have liked to put the information out even faster, but due to the situation that has arisen, we need more time,” Høie noted at a press conference on Wednesday.

He reiterated that people should not plan leisure trips abroad at Easter or earlier.

The Minister of Health also explained why the government has not come up with a clearer definition of the notion of “unnecessary travel.”

“Sometimes it is very necessary to visit family elsewhere in the country, other times it is completely unnecessary.

“We want people to limit these trips, but each individual must decide for themselves. Most people are good at it,” Høie said.

Singapore Airlines expands NDC relationship with Amadeus

SINGAPORE, DEC 2020 - When Singapore Airlines first joined Amadeus NDC [X], the carrier focused on digital transformation, enhancing retailing capabilities, and creating a more personalised experience for its travellers.

Today, Singapore Airlines deepens this commitment to modern retailing, supported by Amadeus technology, by making its NDC offers available to travel sellers through the Amadeus Travel Platform.

Travel agents worldwide connected to the Amadeus Travel Platform will soon be able to shop, book, and pay for all Singapore Airlines offers made available through NDC as part of the airline’s KrisConnect program.

This includes ancillary services such as seat selection, excess baggage, special fares, and personalised merchandising offers for loyalty members and corporate travellers.

This is just the start of more exciting opportunities that NDC will bring, with more content becoming available soon such as dynamic fares.

The content will be available in the Amadeus NDC-enabled solutions used by agents today, providing a familiar and efficient booking environment.

The Amadeus Travel Platform includes critical servicing functionalities that agents need, such as the cancelation, void, refund and modification of NDC bookings.

Bryan Koh, divisional vice president, e-commerce and distribution, Singapore Airlines, said: “We look forward to providing more attractive and customised offers on Amadeus’ extensive travel agency network via NDC.

“Singapore Airlines remain committed to improving our retail capabilities and extending them to travel agents through multiple channels and touchpoints such as self-booking tools, web services, travel agency front office solutions, and mobile.”

Travel sellers will be able to make bookings through Amadeus’ NDC-enabled solutions – Amadeus Selling Platform Connect and Amadeus Travel API – starting from January in several markets in APAC and beyond.

“This exciting announcement is yet another leap forward for Amadeus in our NDC journey.

“Driving NDC forward and realising its next generation retailing capabilities for our customers is a key part of our long-term global strategy.

“We have processed NDC bookings through the Amadeus Travel Platform since 2018, and the capabilities and content are not only here today but also continually being enriched as more and more airlines and travel sellers gear up on NDC.

“We are working closely with the industry to increase adoption and drive volume by delivering the performance, scalability, market reach, and global support that airlines and travel sellers need,” added Javier Laforgue, executive vice president, airlines distribution and content sourcing, Amadeus.
