Japanese NGO launches project to promote educational opportunities of children with disabilities

 

ISLAMABAD, DEC 3 /DN/ - Japanese NGO “AAR Japan (Association for Aid and Relief Japan)” is implementing a 3-year project “Developing educational support system for children with Disabilities (CWDs)” in two primary schools: elementary and secondary schools in Haripur District (Government primary school No.4 for boys and Government primary school for girl’s TIP housing society) in the Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Province since November 2019.

The project aims to promote the educational opportunities of children with disabilities in the general education system by providing teacher’s training, building accessible environment, and creating disability awareness.

The project has identified around 150 children with disabilities in two communities of targeted schools. 21 children with disabilities have enrolled and are now attending school in these schools.

Among the 21 newly enrolled children with disabilities, 3 of them are children with total blindness. AAR started (*) braille lectures for them this November with Self-financing funded by donations from the People of Japan. As a first step of the class, a teacher with total blindness is teaching braille alphabets and numbers to the children. The braille class is arranged every day for a duration of 2 hours.

The Embassy of Japan in Pakistan would like to send an encouragement to the children studying in the Braille class at the time of the International Day of People with Disability and pay tribute to AAR and all those concerned who gave the children wonderful gifts.

Braille is one of the means of studying for children with total blindness and partial blindness. Braille is a form of written language for blind people, in which characters are represented by patterns of raised dots that are felt with the fingertips.=DN
