Retorts erupted from Moscow after Maia Sandu demanded withdrawal of Russian troops from Transnistria

Moscow has been breaking its word for more than 20 years

The elected President of the Republic of Moldova, Maia Sandu, has demanded the withdrawal of Russian troops from Transnistrian territory, writes RADOR, who will have to be replaced by OSCE observers.

RADOR cites, in this context, Moscow's reply to Maia Sandu's statements. It came through the voice of Dmitry Peskov, a spokesman for President Vladimir Putin: "A change in the status quo in Transnistria could lead to destabilization."

"Russia is playing a very important role and, of course, a change in the status quo, which is based on the spirit and letter of international law, could lead to serious destabilization," Peskov told a news conference.

The Kremlin expects "all this to be discussed and no sudden moves", Peskov added, a reaction coming from the Russian Foreign Ministry: "Mrs. Sandu's position undermines efforts to reach a peaceful solution."

Russia has pledged to withdraw its troops and ammunition from Transnistria since 1999, but has not complied with it.
